Plenty of talk around Rick Wilhite seems to be how under-rated he is compared to his 3 Chairs peers Theo Parrish, Moodymann and Marcellus Pittman and Detroit compatriots. If he was from any other city in the world, the concept of being under-represented would be ludicrous for a producer of such stature and DJ of such capability, so let’s put aside perceptions and salute The Godson for what he is: a premier selector, curator and maker of music.

In the summer of 2024, I was fortunate enough to spend the summer in New York City. And I couldn't pass up the chance to see Legendary Theo Parrish. He played a six-hour set in his signature style. I was so hungry for that sound and dancing to those rhythms and vibes. I spent the whole 6 hours in front of the DJ booth... in front of this magic sound system, dancing non-stop, all 6 hours! As a keepsake of such a rare and very significant event in my life, I decided to record the entire DJ set in full on my phone's voice recorder. After six months I decided to share this incredible and magical musical Universe in which there is one God and that is DJ! And his name is Theo Parrish! I apologize for the raw sound of the audio recording on the recorder, and all the noise around the music, but it emphasizes the atmosphere and mystique of that morning! Yes, that morning! Theo started playing at 9am and finished at 3pm! It was like a Sunday service at church. I'm blessed! Thank you Theo!

RA.1000 launches with Theo Parrish, live at fabric: a vanishingly rare club mix from the king of deep crates and impossible transitions.

There are DJ sets and then there are Theo sets. No matter how many times you've caught him in action, every time still feels like the first. Running hot, levels smoking, isolator working over time. You think you know dance music? Think again.

Parrish's debut on the RA Podcast is a milestone for the series, one we've sought for over 15 years. So it was only right that Theo led off our 1000th celebrations. Recorded live at fabric last December as part of RA's party with the London club for their 25th anniversary, this three-hour segment documents the crescendo of his eight-hour marathon. 

The Detroit legend doesn't release mixes often, and when he does, they're usually studio recordings: think NTS shows, his 100% Detroit edition of DJ-Kicks or classic tapes Body (1997) and Methods of Movement (2000). A capture of the Sound Signature boss on the dancefloor is hard to come by.

Sure, there's galvanising build-ups and crowd-pleasers, but laced throughout a Parrish beatdown are rarities designed to shock the system. In a business dominated by marketing, the vinyl master towers above thanks to a relentless hunger for lustrous melodies, moods and textures of all stripes, which he and he alone can fold into an inspiring and exhilarating joyride.

On RA.1000, blissful reggae precedes new wave disco; '80s R&B morphs into synthy techno; bleepy Chicago jack makes way for a poignant vocal ballad. It's Theo through and through. Once again, he proves that anything and everything is possible with the right records.

This month’s show is a dedication to songs that inspire to my damn feet, and I hope it inspires any listeners to do the same!

From John: “One of my favorite things to do with friends or by myself sometimes is drive around Belle Isle and listen to music. The first couple laps are mandatory, especially on a really nice day. But it’s something about that third lap. Something that helps you confirm with yourself that you REALLY enjoy where you are, what you’re doing, and what you’re hearing. Whether heading to a picnic or the conservatory or just chillin by the water, this is what I like to hear, and I love sharing music.”

Born into a family filled with a deep love of music, John Adams’ DJ journey has felt like nothing short of a blessing to him. Rooted in Detroit, the city that birthed techno, his style is a tapestry woven from various genres of Black music. John’s goal behind the decks is to connect with the listener, hoping that he’ll help them love his song selections as much as he does.

His distinct mixing style has been featured on stages across Detroit, including sets at renowned venues like UFO Bar, Spkrbox, Paramita Sound, and others. Since May of this year, he’s held a biweekly residency at The High Dive with friend and multi-hyphenate Andre Moore, where they consistently deliver sets that are both deeply groove-oriented and a good time. Whether you’re tuning in to a mix of his or hearing him live, all he hopes for is that the experience is one worth moving to.
