A unique type of breakthrough act delivers this week's mix.

Marquis Hawkes debuted in 2012, releasing a trio of EPs on Glasgow's Dixon Avenue Basement Jams label. Drawing from classic Chicago house, with a no frills approach to production that made him the perfect fit for the label (whose motto is "real rockin' raw shit from the street for the clubs"), the EPs made him an instant one-to-watch in house and techno. 2014 was Hawkes' most productive year yet: as well as another record on Dixon Avenue, he delivered records for European labels that fit his approach (Clone Jack for Daze, Creme Organisation) and inked a deal with Houndstooth, who released his Fifty Fathoms Deep EP.

Hawkes is no kid, however (if you didn't gather that from the illustration above): a British ex pat in Berlin, he was making music for 15 years before finding success as Marqius, and his FACT mix draws from two decades of buying and making dance records. DBX, Kerri Chandler, Armando and Roy Davis Jr are all included, while there's also an airing for newer, but still classic-sounding house from Leon Vynehall and Delroy Edwards.

Conspiracy in Sant Antony was born during my time in Ibiza, inspired by the energy and atmosphere of Sant Antony. The melodies came naturally in that moment, carrying the vibe of the island, while the creole vocal samples fell perfectly into place, giving the track its unique character. It’s a blend of deep rhythm, hypnotic layers, and a touch of mystery — a snapshot of my Ibiza experience turned into sound.

You might have seen him around Seoul these days. He brings bunch of vinyls to every party and pleases us with his unique disco and house music. We could feel bright and positive energy during the interview in a cozy cafe in Itaewon.
