The claustrophobic, miasmic world of Tense Men is a world of scuttling shapes, deformed shadows and rigid, repetitive rhythms. The world of Tense Men has a low ceiling, the walls are wooden, rotting in places and badly varnished. The world of Tense Men is clammy to the touch. Eyes twitch, ears ring. Ears burn, eyes sting. The world of Tense Men is dripping all over your mouldy living room carpet. Reptilian tongues darting in and out tasting the dank air. Human forms jerking awkwardly to a record skipping in a locked, sweaty room. Shrieking voices. Murmuring whispers. Telling you things you don’t want to know over and over again, you listen because you aren’t sure if you’re really hearing it or not. You are! Aren't you?

Tense Men was two and is now three men, varying in tension, height and origination. These men also exist within other entities, namely Sauna Youth, Cold Pumas and Omi Palone, amongst others. It began in the bleak Autumn of 2010 and has henceforth been peddling its suspect wares back and forth, here and there. Prior to Where Dull Care is Forgotten, there was an unnamed cassette on Casenove Tapes.

The pseudonymous “Ty-Rex” corner of Ty Segall’s oeuvre represents the nom-de-rock behind which Segall puts his spin on favored Tyrannosaurus Rex & T. Rex compositions. On November 27th (2015), Goner Records presents the release of the Ty-Rex full-length. After some time in out-of-print monetary nether-regions, this album compiles six-song Ty Rex EP (aka Ty Rex 1) originally released by Goner as a limited edition 12” for Record Store Day 2011 with the RSD 2013 two-song Ty Rex 2 7”. As if this wasn’t enough of a corrective gesture, Ty-Rex is expanded to include a previously-unreleased T. Rex cover as a bonus, but first… 

For those who missed out on this nook of Segall’s rapidly-growing footprint across the rock landscape, here is a cursory rundown: The compilation showcases a nice balance between T. Rex’s ’67 – ’70 psych-folk incarnation under the name Tyrannosaurus Rex and the better known pioneering and perfecting of glam-rock that defined the first ’71 – 73 era under the shortened T. Rex moniker. Kicking things off is the thick, woozily-rocking interpretation of “Fist Heart Mighty Dawn Dart”; one of two covers pulled from Tyrannosaurus Rex’s fourth and best album, 1970’s A Beard of Stars. Ty then double-dips into the consummate T. Rex (and for that matter, the entire glam-rock movement) achievement, The Slider, with a rendition of “Buick MacKane” followed by an excellent dirtying-up of the title track. Clearly digging deep with the ear and understanding of a super-fan, next up is Ty’s awesome tackling of “Woodland Rock”-an Electric Warriorouttake that also surfaced on the B-side to 1971’s non-album “Hot Love” single. Returning to Tyrannosaurus Rex fare for the two tracks that originally concluded the Ty-Rex 1 EP, we have “Salamanda Palaganda” from 1968’s Prophets, Seers & Sages:  The Angels of the Ages and A Beard of Stars’ “Elemental Child”. Rounding out this much-needed collection are “Cat Black” (from Tyrannosaurus Rex’s 1969 album, Unicorn) andElectric Warrior’s closing song, “The Motivator” from the Ty-Rex II 7”. Wrapping up this compilation discography of Ty-Rex material is the aforementioned previously-unreleased bonus track, Ty’s cover of “20th Century Boy” (a non-album T. Rex single from 1973).

Hailing from Leeds, FEHM are a three piece making pissed off post punk influenced by the likes of The Sound, The Birthday Party, Flux of Pink Indians and Honey Bane.

Due for release 25th November 2016 on cream coloured 12”, Circadian Life is their debut EP and takes the form of twenty one minutes of wailing guitars, driving drums and the ever-brooding dulcet tones of Paul Riddle. According to the band “the EP as a whole tells a story from start to finish, it’s about seeing the changes that occur in people around you and how we separate over time. More importantly, the EP reflects the monotony of everyday life and peoples’ struggle to achieve what they really want.”

The EP was recorded, mixed and mastered with Matt Peel at the Nave recording studio in Leeds in June 2016. The EP's distinctive artwork was shot by the band's Amy Fishlock.

Who May Have Found God?

'Good Sense' is taken from Hash Redactor's debut album entitled 'Drecksound', out April 26th through Upset The Rhythm and Goner Records.

A quick glance at the résumés of Hash Redactor’s members might seed certain expectations.  The band is fronted by guitarist Alec McIntyre of Ex-Cult, with NOTS rhythm warriors Meredith Lones on bass and Charlotte Watson on drums, and rounded off by George Williford on second guitar.  But their debut full-length dives into territory that feels distinctly untethered from their lineage and era.  Drecksound is a clattering, shambolic oasis in the sleek digital desert of the late twenty-teens.  
 
Perhaps both because and in spite of the alienation that typifies the glut of rock music at the end of this god-damned decade, these twelve songs deliver a pointed social criticism, more cathartic than suffocating, while championing a nihilism that greets the abyss by laughing mockingly in its face. The chorus to the incendiary Step 2: Success is sneered, not sung, “It’s a long con job and you just got it wrong / banned from the world.” Or take Open Invite’s opening missive, “I won’t settle for anything less than a four-star refugee camp.” McIntyre’s lyrics present a puckish fascination with humankind’s rake-stepping self destruction.  He’s a merry prankster, but more in the mold of a jackbooted Monty Python character than a Ken Kesey acid casualty. Case in point: A-side epic In The Tank, where a vindictive custodian boils alive the wealthy patrons at the sensory-deprivation tank facility where he works.
 
McIntyre and Williford’s guitar interplay on Drecksound draws from some weird rundown of usual and unusual suspects in the tight corner of avant-punk guitar work, recalling some free-association that includes: Marquee Moon, John Fahey gone electric, the playing on Ornette Coleman’s mid-70s Body Meta and Dancing In Your Head, prime-era Flesheaters, and (why not) the first two Meat Puppets albums. Without anything resembling traditional leads, guitars snake in, out and around Lones’s bass lines, which alternate between slinky earworm hooks and steel cable raw power.  All of this is locked in by Watson’s characteristically visceral swing.  It doesn’t feel controversial to claim that the duo of Watson and Lones constitutes one of the best rhythm sections to be heard anywhere in contemporary punk music.
 
Having played out heavy in 2018 with a refined live show, a four-song demo, and several Gonerfest appearances under their belt, HR cut the record at home on a borrowed 8-track cassette machine. The deranged raw tracks were mixed into final form by Matt Qualls at Young Avenue Sound, and mastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering. Hash Redactor will be touring the States in summer and with plans for Europe later in 2019. Drecksound is out April 26 on Upset the Rhythm in UK/EU and the rest of the world on Goner.
