'Vision Quest' is a ritual of dedication - initiation, which helps to correctly pass through important life changes, rapid events, accelerate the manifestation of the True Self and clarify life goals. When the old relationship between a person and the world around him becomes impossible due to changes, there comes a time and a need for transition. We encounter limitations either in ourselves (changing needs, opportunities, values, inability to live in the same ways), or in the world around us. It's a process that helps you get out of the vicious circle of old relationships, recognize changes, find your own answer to the question "Who am I now?" and return to the world to build new relationships.

I have always created worlds in my music where the listener could escape and hide from external factors in order to feel comfortable and protected so that they can think about eternal and important things, no matter what happens outside.

This album is inspired by my trip to India 7 years ago. In this way, I wanted to express my gratitude to those wonderful places where I spent an unforgettable time, especially the state of Kerala and those wonderful people who helped and guided me in this. I wanted to share those healing emotions and field recordings from what I learned in this quest.....my Vision Quest.

It is one of Kusuma’s strong suits to produce tracks with a disco kit that go beyond the usual confines of the genre. Here’s a fine example of this. With latin percussion, arpeggios and several layers of melody, the robotic feel is still present but less so than on "Automatone". There's an element of darkness, as hinted by the track title, if they had discos in Tolkien’s universe, DJs would probably spin this.

Two years after the release of his acclaimed debut the “GONG 3000” EP on I’m a Cliché, Jakarta’s best kept secret is back on Cosmo Vitelli’s imprint with four terrific original tracks. Jonathan Kusuma is a producer who has managed in the space of a few releases and remixes to develop a signature sound which mostly relies on taking disco and EBM elements and putting them in new and unexpected contexts, offering us a glimpse of what modern dance music would sound like if house and techno had never existed.

Narcotic, hedonistic, abstract and particularly efficient on the dancefloor, Kusuma’s music is always about quality and never about quantity and so we are particularly thrilled to share with the world the four new tracks that constitute this EP.

The EP opens with this streamlined yet highly efficient tune of a robotic persuasion. Kusuma uses thick sub bass, a round edged groove, metallic percussion, dramatic sweeps and synthetic spurts to create a track that sounds like a sleek machine with a highly polished take on the Power Electronics sound tailored for the dancefloor.

Closing the EP is this dramatic rhythm track that goes way beyond your usual DJ tool. Hand percussion is given a subtle beat repeat treatment, noisy bleeps, eerie vocal samples and arresting pads are used to great effect. It’s another example of Kusuma’s signature sound, tribal and psychedelic but refined and never out of touch.

PRÉMIÈRE: Jonathan Kusuma - Drum Shot [I'm A Cliché]

Inspired by the flora and fauna of our planet, Sign Libra’s productions invoke lush, magical dreamscapes. In 2016 the Latvian RBMA alumna released her ‘Closer to the Equator’ EP digitally via Sounds of the Dawn and now the excellent French label Antinote is blessing us with a physical version of the record. We’re excited to host the second track from the EP, entitled “Mantodea vs. Furcifer Pardalis,” a beautiful concoction that Sign Libra also played for us in the participant introduction round at the 2016 Academy in Montréal. Since she provided us with an evocative description of her own track, we can’t help but to share that with you as well in full:

“Living in trees and bushes, animals must hide themselves well from predators and be skillful hunters. One of such masters of ambush and mimicry is the praying mantis. Well camouflaged and lighting up quickly, this insect is a highly efficient predator, but it has a worthy enemy – the panther chameleon. Its camouflage is exceptional because it can change skin colour to match its surroundings. During the hunt the chameleon’s eyes move independently to spot prey. It creeps towards its victim until it unleashes a super weapon – its tongue, which shoots out at a speed of 15 meters per second and not only hits but grasps its target…”

Nick Smith breaks cover from the sanctuary of his Clandestino guise and makes a long-over due, yet welcome return to his solo project as he delivers a humid, intoxicating EP for Phil Cooper's NuNorthern Soul outfit. 'Waves Take Hold' consists of three atmospheric recordings that richly mine influences from early Nineties utopian Iberian dance-floors to far away exotic islands. Here we spotlight the breezy 'Palm Cove'; languid hand drums marry with gentle marimbas as Nick's love of New Age motifs come to the fore. Delicate strings sit in the background while subtle field recordings add to the genteel atmosphere, perfectly capturing the ambiance. A summer highlight for sure.
