When it comes to UK funky, KG is a name synonymous with the genre. DJ, producer and broadcaster Karen Nyame has long lent her time to keeping the sound beloved during 2008 and ’09 alive. She began producing when she was just eight years old, developing an obsession with music programming before the North London-raised artist came to cut her teeth on local pirate radio where she was immersed in the London sounds she loved so much: UKG, grime and house. Having collaborated with Scratchclart (fka Scratcha DVA) on a handful of EPs, KG’s most recent production outing was her ‘Sensei’ EP via Goon Club Allstars, a riotous blend of club energy with bold strokes of colour. “It was mandatory for me to pay homage to my African (Ghanaian) roots and combine Afro polyrhythms with authentic UK funky club sounds,” she explains. ‘Feeling Funky’ is a remaster of the floor-filling classic from 2009, a highly-sought-after club heater that KG made while at uni in Nottingham. What better way to remind us that summer (and the reopening of clubs) are on the horizon than a mix from KG herself, whose Dummy Mix is a smile-inducing trip through “soulful house, gqom, afro bass and UK funky blends,” she says. “Couple faves from myself, Bamz, Hagan, Nidia, Cooly G, Bok Bok and many more.” For her, lockdown for her has been a productive period in terms of production, although she does miss the club. “Nothing beats real time engagement or connection to those who love your music in a club environment,” she stresses. “The energy is unmatched.”
