There is something quite enchanting about the way the needle slides through the grooves of a record to generate those other grooves that flow across the air to find our bodies and flood our senses. It is a kind of magic, very mundane in its effects and arcane in its origins, but accessible to everyone who’s willing to unearth forgotten charms that lie beyond mere availability in order to cast them at the right time in the right spaces. This is essentially the secret that distinguishes a collector - who just hoards those spells - from a selector - who shares their power with the public - and what makes Brasilian born and Brooklyn bound Mari Mac Dowell one of the finest among the latter. Using her Synth Waves platform to spread the aural conjurations found in her deep research of rhythmic patterns, she’s established herself as a reliable source of musical incantations that are deeply irresistible, vastly illuminating and thoroughly danceable. What else could we possibly ask for?

This week, it is with great pleasure that we can bring you a mixtape selected from an impressive record collection, complied bu dedicated crate digger, and true purveyors of global sounds: La Casa Tropical.

Hailing from Toronto, but spending lots of their of time in Johannesburg where the record label has taken its deep rooted musical influence, La Casa Tropical crew are on a mission to release and reissue the feel good party gems that they have discovered on their African adventure. 

No wonder then, that our past guest REES opened his Bside account with this sunny song from their 2018 reissue of Bayete’s Blue Monday, just a little taste of the amazing music they have discovered in South Africa :

Their quest has allowed them to share some amazing music with their followers and fellow party goers across Europe and the US. But, today they will be sharing with the world the jewels of their journey from the Bside of their collection.

La Casa Tropical living up to the name with non-stop feel good summer tunes, all the way from the joyful bliss of a deep dubby downtempo variety, to bopping hip-hop beats, soulful lyrics and Caribbean percussions, before moving on up to some energetic rhythms from mother Africa.

Q: How did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the eventual result?

Hello boys, thanks for having us! Usually when we prepare a regular mix (with no "theme" or such) we try to be as wide as possible in terms of genre. we like our mixes to be something fluid and natural , evolving from track to track into a different mood or kind of sound,  from downtempo to uptempo (and sometimes back)
So our scheme usually is like this: we choose a bunch or records to create the spine of the mix and then adjust by substituting or adding other tracks until we reach the point when we enjoy playing it without having the feel "oh i miss something here". 
We are happy with the final result of this mix , hope listeners will enjoy the ride too!

Q: Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story?

We have a  strong bond with a lot of records we play, some have a story, many others don't. Most of the time is about feelings that records is capable of  giving to us. This mix has the peculiarity of containing few finds from "quarantine online digging" which is something we could never imagine to experience in our like (i mean the quarantine part). One of these special one is Madeleine Uzho - Satisfied. no better medicine to cheer up a day of lockdown that finding a good record like that for cheap.

Q: Do you have a special digging process and/or what kind of things do you look for in a record when you’re out digging?

We have no science behind this, when we go crate digging we try to look for different elements  that catches our attention like label, musicians involved, date, sometimes just artwork or logo. the step after is searching for a reference on YT or SC in case there's no record player at disposal (we do enjoy a lot flea markets so sometimes is just blind buying!). Online things are easier because of search filters : )

Q: Is there a record, that has continued to be in your wantlist over the years?

There are a lot of records always in the wantlist. first one i recall is  Unique - Sankofa

Q: Music bonds people together. Any local heros/parties you would like to shout out? 

We would like to shout out to all the nice guys and crews in Milan we've met along the road, especially Eternal Love, Luca from Rocket Radio and the crew of Polifonic for inviting us to play in their festival, unfortunately postponed to covid. we were so happy to be invited to play there, but who knows, maybe in the future we will! ; )

El año pasado tuvimos el placer de conocer y pinchar junto a Augusto hasta pasada la madrugada en uno de los encuentros latinoamericanos propuestos por Selvagem. 

Trepanado es uno de los fundadores y quien dirige ahora Selvagem, como también Selva discos, sello encargado de re editar joyas de la música brasilera.

Sin dudas Augusto es uno de los djs referentes de la escena, con una gran habilidad para descubrir discos y una técnica exquisita. A mitad del 2019, lanzo el compilado Street Soul Brasil (1987-1995),vía el sello Hello Sailor de U.S.A.

Este mix, nombrado por él como “Molhado de Delay” ya que fue grabado con el pedal de FX prendido durante la sesión, comienza con sonidos ideales para entrar en ambiente y terminar bailando.

⁣⁣Born in Bavaria and raised in Brazil he emigrated back to Germany at the age of 18. Phil moved from Munich, via Heidelberg, Mettingen, Osnabrück, and Hannover before settling in the German capital one year ago. ⁣Together with @djrotwein, he founded @balearicbanana, a high-quality mix series and deep-digging Youtube channel representing their music taste. Opening with a laid-back yet political rap track by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, the mix takes you through Reggae, Downtempo, Street Soul, and Cosmic Disco in multiple languages, while always maintaining a sturdy groove with a sprinkle of obscurity in every track.

Ele está prestes a lançar sua primeira edição no Bandcamp para o jovem selo brasileiro Bongosynth (não perca sua opinião sobre esta faixa de Ivete Sangalo axé) e Richard é o homem por trás de um punhado de edits amigáveis de sons turcos e libaneses ​​para pistas de dança.



Em seu mix, Richard leva do down ao uptempo, do Brasil ao Oriente Médio, passando pelos mais diversos gêneros e estilos. Ele mostra algumas de suas descobertas mais recentes, alguns de seus novos edits privados e, no final, apresenta algumas músicas exclusivas inéditas feitas pelos amigos @dardisku & @movingstill.


Richard Fribert is a Swedish vinyl affecionado, DJ and edit maker based in Paris. He is one of the guys behind the YouTube channel @quartiergroove exploring forgotten and unknown grooves from all over the planet, and part of the Parisian collective @nostandards. His music took him all the way to Tokyo, Copenhagen, Brussels & Stockholm in 2019, and in 2020 Richard has remained busy sharing his music discoveries in radio shows at (Rinse France, Ola Radio Bordeaux, IMR Paris, Rocket Radio Milano, Depot Radio Copenhagen), mix series (De Kat Memwa from St Petersburg) and with a 60 min film/mixtape exploring lots of Caribbean and Brazilian rare grooves and epic films for the Danish crew Back To Future Sounds. He is currently just about to release his first edit on Bandcamp for the young Brazilian label Bongosynth (don’t miss his take on this hard-hitting Ivete Sangalo axé track) and Richard is the man behind a handful of upcoming dancefloor friendly edits with Turkish and Lebanese roots.



In his mix, Richard takes from down to uptempo, from Brazil to the Middle East, through a wide variety of genres and styles. He showcases both some of his most recent own discoveries, a few of his own new private cuts, and towards the end he features some unreleased exclusive music made by friends @dardisku & @movingstill.
