Yet another collective that has been instrumental to our efforts of branching throughout Brasil and establishing contact with many parts of the gigantic ecosystem of scenes it boasts, Belo Horizonte's 101Ø is certainly one of the most vivid among them. Established in this past decade that was so bountiful for the type of collective endeavours that helped shape the nightlife of metropolises such as São Paulo and their hometown, their lively presence and penchant for the finest type of debauchery as well as intense musical enjoyment already became the stuff of legend. Needless to say, these success stories are made of characters and the force of this prolific venture lies on the joint efforts of its members, which is why our guest for this episode is one of the main talents that make this hedonistic mineira enterprise so unique. Bárbara is the type of artist whose sets can move crowds in all kinds of settings or under any circumstances, simply because it is fun-inducing in its intention, mind-blowing in its conception and floor-lifting in its execution, which is precisely the kind of inescapable and irresistible energy what she brings to the table here.

Formed by researcher Giu Nunez and musician Mauricio Fleury, their duo project seeks to bring a different perspective on music. They incorporate traces of synthesizers and electronic beats, combined with the experimental sounds inspired from both artists' research. The result is phenomenal. Accept this invitation to enter the musical world of the duo, filled with percussion and more Brazilian sounds: a true sound experience.

For the start of the new season we are headed straight to São Paulo and welcome Giu Nunez. She is resident of the DOMply party in Rio de Janeiro and hosts her own radio shows COSMOZÔNIA and RÁDIO PLOW, presenting rare digs and eclectic mixes of all blends of world music. 

In her contribution to this edition of the selector series she is taking us on an hour-long trip through sun-kissed African and Caribbean gems to breezy Brazilian Boogie and Disco, providing us with a high dose of tropical exuberance and bliss that is desperately needed in those gloomy times. A lover of free and perched figured dating, Why Pink? assumes a big penchant for weird and leftfield synthetic dissonances. Curious, he advocates the mixing of genres against a backdrop of hypnotic moist and granular textures. Present on the Marseille music scene, he also broadcasts his mixes and selections on local radio stations such as Radio Grenouille and Tikka radio, and more recently on one-shot shows with LYL radio, Tsugi radio and the promising podcast series entitled Off-cuts.

LAYER #254 | Why Pink?

TropiCals Family, 

Due to Pandemic, we missed our happiest moment of the year, Carnival. Moment in which we are totally free of judgments to be truly happy and to throw our bodies into the world.

Therefore, we want to bring you nostalgic moments and, for this third edition of TropiCaldo Sonoro, we invited a master in the subject: Gustavo Keno (@gustavokeno). Aside from being a DJ, Keno is graduated in History which led him to a critic awareness that is translated straight into his music.

Owner of Ilê Discos – a record store based in Rio de Janeiro – and researcher on the Youtube channel called Juntos Com Certeza, Gustavo music moves between the 80s and the 90s, wandering from bright and alive compositions founded in social and religious themes from the Afro-Brazilian and African Diaspora ethos.

“Baleáfrico is my place of strength in these troubled times. It is also a neologism – something that I created to give sonority to a phenomenon that is very particular to my persona. Baleáfrico is the antithesis of what was (and still is) the Balearic – this eclectic blend that turned the summers and dance floors of Ibiza in gigantic parties.

But in my country (the last to abolish the slavery I must say) my summers were pumped by other blends: drums, tambourines, afoxés, axés and so many other variants that I am not yet able to reproduce in names. 

This is exactly what the “Baleáfrico” is: the still obscure black brasilian music who needs to be (re)discovered. Songs that evoque the black world – our world; the orishas, the bodies and the hairs, our suburbs, the alleys of my childhood, the beaches of Salvador crowned with flowers during the festival dedicated to Iemanjá: all the dark-skinned protagonists who make the show but aren't allowed to be inside.

This mix represents all this.

Devido a Pandemia, perdemos nosso momento mais feliz do ano, o Carnaval. Momento no qual somos totalmente livres de julgamentos para sermos verdadeiramente felizes e jogarmos nossos corpos ao mundo.

Por isso, queremos trazer momentos nostálgicos a vocês e, para essa terceira edição da TropiCaldo Sonoro, convidamos um mestre no assunto: Gustavo Keno (@gustavokeno). Além de ser DJ, Keno é formado em História - fator determinante que fez com que uma consciência de crítica social se traduzisse em sua música.

Proprietário da Ilê Discos - uma modesta loja de disco no Rio de Janeiro - e pesquisador no canal do YouTube chamado Juntos Com Certeza,  Gustavo transita por entre os anos 80 e 90 e traz em sua seleção composições calcadas em temas sociais e religiosos do universo afro-brasileiro e da diáspora africana.

“Baleáfrico é o meu ponto de equilíbrio em tempos tão turvos. É também um neologismo - algo que, talvez, eu tenha criado para dar sonoridade a um fenômeno que me é muito particular na minha construção pessoal como pesquisador e historiador. “Baleáfrico” é a antítese do que foi, e ainda é, o Baleárico - esse estilo que fez com que as pistas de dança e os verões de Ibiza explodissem em festas gigantescas. 

Porém, os meus verões aqui nesse país (o último a abolir a escravidão, é preciso dizer) foram embrasados por percussões agressivas, tambores, repiques, bacurinhas, afoxés, axés e tantas outras variantes que ainda não sou capaz de reproduzir em nomes. 

Baleáfrico é exatamente isso: a ainda obscura música preta brasileira que carece ser (re)descoberta. Canções e composições que evocam o mundo afro - o nosso mundo; os orixás, o balanço dos corpos e dos cabelos, os subúrbios em polvorosa nas sextas-feiras, a elegância inusitada das vielas da minha infância, as praias de Salvador coroadas de flores quando o dois de fevereiro se anuncia pra gente, os inúmeros protagonistas de pele escura que ainda ficam sempre à margem do espetáculo. 

Esse meu set representa tudo isso…
