Milan-based, Chilean-born DJ, producer, and keen digger, Paula Tape joins us for the 89th edition of the Phonica Mix Series.

Although Paula started her musical career out as a drummer in various metal and indie bands, she is best known now for her distinct brand of breezy yet energetic dance music and her musical creations have been picked up by such labels as SOBO and Alzaya Records, as well as her forthcoming Astroturismo EP on Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section International.

Paula is also an active member of the Tempo Dischi crew – a label on a mission to discover and repress Italian gems from the lost era, such as Alexander Robotnick’s Computer Sourire and Contact Music’s Keep On Dance to name but two.

If we think beyond the more obvious meaning the term “residency" holds in our culture as a platform that aims to provide stability for artists to create and regularity for the public to access their work, strengthening and deepening their relationship in the process, we realise that some of its most basic senses are lost. Here we tend to overlook or even forget the most essential ones, those that evoke feelings such as intimacy or shelter, as they relate directly to one of the most fundamental concepts of all usually attached to that word, that of “home”. And, even though it can be a lot of things to many people, for DJs it is a special place where the relation to their community can be nurtured on a regular basis and the trust that allows them to be bold in their selections can be fortified constantly. For one as devoted to his craft and dedicated to his audience as our guest for this episode, they are fundamental elements of a truly magical dancefloor that he can take anywhere and everywhere in his musical quests. This is precisely what Pascal Moscheni does at every opportunity he gets, be it through his own projects such as the celebrated Hands On Sand or in delightfully hedonistic mixes as this one in which he captures the solar bliss and the sandy textures of the Ibizan landscape and converts it into a brilliant aural journey that ends up proving that home can be more than just a comfortable place that maintains us protected, it can be an irresistible force that keeps us together.

Ensembles are not the norm among the preferred performance formats chosen by the craftsmen that make up this noble art of playing music for the enjoyment of others. It's been deeply individualized throughout most of its history and, looking carefully into it, one might be able to find a few famous duos or even fewer legendary trios, but seldom quite a tight knit quartet such as the people responsible for this platform and everything behind, beneath and beyond it. Gop Tun, the name of the project that congregates them around a common goal and shared vision, is more than just the multifarious brainchild of four music lovers truly, madly and deeply committed to make us dance by any means necessary using every tool at their disposal, it is also a collective effort in trying to foster the perfect conditions for that precious interaction between their peers and their public to happen, generating the priceless moments that make the stuff of indelible memories. As a visionary group of curators, their unified efforts nurtured a host of initiatives that range from events that shaped their hometown’s nightlife, a label that is relentless in promoting regional talent, as well as this very series now celebrating its 100th edition of collecting musical journeys helmed by people from all over the globe. As a gifted team of selectors, interconnected by the type of complicity built over decades of friendship, they operate at a molecular level in which every aspect that binds them is exactly what makes them move freely in order to create astounding musical experiences of which this mix is but a tiny yet powerful example, one that carries within it all the energy and inventiveness that goes into everything they do.
