After nearly a decade since throwing down what was then a guilty pleasure mix with Dance 懐かしい which was a blatant J-Boogie and Disco party starter I did in 2008/09, I thought it high time to drop another Japanese only mix. 

At the time I considered that mix to be a "guilty pleasure" as nobody was playing Japanese pop music around the time and let's face it if you discount the esoteric new-wave stuff most of this music is mainline pop music so can be an acquired taste in a sea of cool. Also, Japanese music wasn't really played locally in Tokyo as far as I can remember back in 2000 to 2010. Which for a gaijin (foreigner) peering in to this vast catalogue added to the guilty nature of diving in and really digging this stuff. The exception would have to be Zecky who turned the whole world on to the likes of Takanaka Masayoshi of course and wore his heart on his sleeve with his selections. 

Anyway that was 2009, it's eight years on and Japanese music, at least the popular top boogie bits or obvious names have all been dug out, compiled and edited. Japan got hot these past years. The guilt has subsided, but the pleasure clearly still remains.

There's really nothing rare here. A mix of 1972 to 2013, soul, pop, songs and beats for the city. These are all fairly cheap digs (with the exception of one $200 record - total madness!!). All are tunes that have rarely surfaced on mixes or comps, but they're personal digs so I will stick my neck out for them. They follow no trend, there's no oneupmanship here in having expensive records and this isn't a "hot list", that's not how it works. It's simply an attempt by me to say I love this stuff..

Who else would be better to kick off with than our dear friend Palms Trax? Not only has Jay been a favourite of ours for years, he has become probably everyone else’s as well. His contribution to In Focus is one we have listened to in one go: a “100% originals, features, edits and remixes by Joaquin Joe Claussell” mix, which resulted in a stirring and spiritual tribute to one of the all-time greats.

Palms Trax: “Over the last couple of years I’ve found his music to have this wonderful effect on a dancefloor where the whole place can feel like it’s levitating, so when lockdown hit I started going through his records at home and found it to be incredibly healing.
