In this lecture I shall outline Timothy Leary’s (1920 – 1996) spiritual approach and his dream of the re-emerging of cosmic consciousness by means of an entheogenic revolution.

Timothy Leary slipped into various roles throughout his life: he was a clinical psychologist at Harvard University, advocate of the therapeutic potentials of LSD and psilocybin, leading spokesman of U.S. American counterculture, outlaw, or as Richard Nixon put it: “The most dangerous man in America”. Yet, one of his most controversial roles was that of a guru of psychedelic religion. Together with Ralph Metzner and Richard Alpert Leary accomplished a manual on the ritual use of LSD as a means of reaching an enlightened state of consciousness. In The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead (1964) Leary thus moved beyond a mere therapeutic approach towards the development of what he called applied mysticism.

As a scholar of religion with a special focus on esoteric matters I have dealt with the spiritual potential of psychedelics as well as with several countercultural luminaries within the frame of “New Age”. Currently I am working on my PhD project “Imagining Energy. The Concept of Kundalini Healing Energy in transpersonal and body-centered psychotherapy” at the University of Vienna.
