Painful Reminder was born from my natural urge to make "one of those" - a mid-2000s Tearout Amen epic with vocals. A niche subgenre I've very much been into for years and years now. I started that track using some sort of generic acapella, but knew I'd approach Vlada about doing vocals, and she happily agreed. I've known and talked to Vlada for years and since we worked together on "My Only Night Alive" in 2014 or so, we always wanted to do more stuff but somehow never got around to it until this tune came around. She visited me last year and recorded a demo version of this in my room with a first draft of lyrics she had written for it and i immediately loved it. With the final vocal tracks especially i feel like she makes that song basically entirely on her own.
Production wise, i spent the most amount of time iterating through different amens and trying to get them to sound "just right". Of course as it often goes i never managed to hit that sweet spot I was aiming for but i think the end result is at the very least good enough. The final amen in this tune is a weird Frankenstein hybrid of 3 different breaks with a ton of back and forth processing. I couldn't recount the chain from memory if you held a gun to my head. A stupid amount of work went into that break and i am glad i don't have to think about it anymore from now on.
