For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake – his second LP for Ghostly International – the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. “This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record.”

Following 2011’s Dive LP, the San Francisco-based designer toured extensively, and with a full band on stage, his sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole. Zac Brown (guitars, bass) rejoined Scott on the road for this tour, but it was the particular addition of Rory O’Connor’s live drumming that ultimately sent Hansen back to the studio with a more precise vision. “After the tour, I decided that I wanted to capture the more energetic, driven sound of the live show on the next album,” Hansen recalls. Bringing musicians into Tycho’s creative process was a step towards expanding his own songwriting and advancing the project beyond its current sound.

In a cabin near Tahoe last winter, Zac and Scott began fleshing out the structure of the new record, but it wasn’t until they set up shop in the hills of Santa Cruz with Rory that it all fell into place. “It crystallized the vision of how the drums would come to the forefront on this record,” says Hansen. The sound was much more stripped-down and concise with more organic instruments in the fold. Songs like “Montana” and “Awake” are a departure from Tycho’s previous material – unique to the group effort poured into the songs on the new record – while “See” and “Dye” echo ideas from previous works, bridging a middle ground between the old and new. Working with Count Eldridge, who also engineered Dive, the team could fixate on the pulses that Tycho might previously layer under synthesizers and exhume them with distinct bass and guitar patterns.

Also known for his design work as ISO50, Hansen’s visual and sonic efforts have dovetailed throughout the course of his career. “This is the first time in my life I've dropped everything to focus on one artistic pursuit,” notes Hansen. Previous Tycho releases came to fruition when an amalgam of songs were nearing completion, but Awake is where music becomes the focus and true expression becomes the result.

Psycho Lover

Follin is the musical project of brother-sister duo Madeline and Richie James Follin. In the down time between record cycles of their respective bands, (Madeline of Cults and Richie of Guards/Willowz) they decided to finally record and release something together. It was an idea that they had hoped to turn into a reality for years, but time never permitted. Finally, in the summer of 2015, their schedules aligned and they were able to make it happen. Although they’ve been making music together since they were children, these songs mark their first collaborative release.

Growing up the children of musicians, the two were raised on early 80’s So-Cal punk. Richie being the elder sibling carefully curated Madeline’s music collection to align with what he was listening to at the time. The siblings have always had a deep connection to music and still share that bond today.

With this project, Madeline and Richie wanted to do something different than they had ever done before. Inspired by distorted synthesizers, drum machines, samples, harmonizers, tape effects and atmospheric sounds, they experimented with new instruments and different vocal styles. Having come to music through the same bloodline, they share a musical voice that made their writing process second nature and continues to shape the way in which they write and record. The songs were recorded at Stockholm Syndrome Sound studios in Bushwick and in their mother’s living room in NYC.

Some Indulgence by The Embassy, Koka-Kola Veins by The Tough Alliance and Mon Amour by The Plan; the list of classic Swedish indie hits hailing from the beautiful west coast city of Gothenburg is almost endless. In Sweden it is often discussed exactly what factors that makes the musicians from this city produce these instant classics, but to this day it is still a mystery. The latest addition to this list of indie gems is "Lust For Life". Album out 8 April on VÅRØ.

Futile met in Gothenburg during their high school years, and after some changes of members in 2015, their current line-up consists of Matias Cortés Santos, Tim Vikman, Magnus Nylander and Daniel Åslund. Futile refuses to put their music within a specific genre but with their rhythmic guitars and catchy synth hooks you can’t help to feel that you’re back in the Hacienda days.

Time For Me

Known for rockin’ over instrumentals from the likes of Marco Polo and The Alchemist, Saga continues that trend of linking with top-notch producers on the Ayatollah-produced, “If We.”

The Queens beatsmith delivers a sample-heavy slapper that makes for the perfect backdrop for his Brooklyn brethren to flex his rapping chops. And as much as he could have easily kept this as a no-hook, straight-rhyming affair, Saga executes a replay friendly chorus laced with wisdom, particularly on lines like, “If we... started realizing being broke doesn’t mean you’re poor.” 

That same sentiment rings true with his verses. While his first two are certainly strong, Saga goes off on the third verse by showcasing exceptional alliteration and internal rhymes that’ll leave your head spinning. It's the type of track that’ll please any NY rap aficionado and impress anyone with even an inkling of an interest in Hip-Hop.

“If We” is now available for stream, and serves as a teaser of sorts for his three week European tour that begins towards the end of March, during which he’ll be opening for Asher Roth.

Brooklyn’s own Saga returns with another ill loosie, “What You Want,” that finds the gifted lyricist teaming with Los Angeles producer, Exile and kicking some serious knowledge.

While previous cut, “If We” was more of a straight-up banger and technical display, “What You Want” dives into the concept of finding joy in the trials of life rather than searching for some grand end result. This is actually referenced in the track’s artwork, which depicts a teary-eyed Wile E. Coyote (known, of course, for his never-ceasing attempts to catch the Road Runner). There’s a great breakdown of the lesson to be learned by Wile’s chase on Quora (view here: http://bit.ly/1MmlywO), but it can be summed up as “the value is in the voyage, not the destination.”

Saga himself drives the concept home in his second verse, wherein he poignantly tears into people who would rather complain and “blame it on the system” than actually do anything to make their lives better. In his words, “they’re just peasants pretendin’ they wearin’ a crown.”

“What You Want” is available for streaming and purchase through iTunes and all major digital retailers. As for Saga’s next move, his European fans can catch him on tour in late March and April opening for Asher Roth.
