For our final mix of 2023, we have Kenny Blacksmith, a friend of the festival and an all-around top selector.

This London-based Scotsman played a pivotal role in London's esteemed SlothBoogie label for almost a decade. Now, in 2024, he unveils a new solo project, emphasising studio craftsmanship and a return to digging and sharing his extensive record collection.

In this mix, Ken takes you on a journey through his collection and shares some new favorites, seamlessly blending his taste for deeper dubs and acid cuts. Here's a quote from the man himself about the mix: “Using a combination of 12’s from recent digs in Berlin, Edinburgh, and London, alongside some sneaky unreleased gems, this mix has been compiled with the hope that it can transport you to a particularly special Friday at the Lighthouse. Dr Banana is a name that commands a lot of respect in certain corners of the dance music world. The man has his Ph.D in record digging—not literally, mind you, but play along—and key to his success is the sense of fun, joy and ecstasy he brings to his DJing. UK garage historian? Sure. Blinding DJ? Definitely. He likes to play records you've never heard before, records that not only make you dance but might remind you of some of your favourite, formative records of yore.

The UK artist started out with a fashion line and some records and ended up an influential label boss, collector and DJ. He made his name with skippy, retro UK garage—sometimes from new producers and sometimes unearthed from the archives—and nicely coincided with the genre's explosion in popularity. Since then, he's highlighted everything from old-school German garage to new-school producers like K-LONE. His DJ sets have only become more adventurous and, crucially, even more bumping. Jungle, R&B, tech house, you name it. His RA Podcast zeroes in on a vintage-sounding, rollicking kind of house music, full of seismic disco basslines and quirky vocal samples. It's as celebratory as it is mysterious.

Once, Dr Banana was a not so well-kept secret for the heads—the kids in Berlin and London who were starting to realize the similarities between UK garage, minimal and tech house. Now, he's for everyone, and starting to earn the wider recognition he deserves.

To kick off 2024 we are bringing you closer to the Central sound, as we proudly present CentralFM. Curated by our residents, the series is set to feature some of the finest talent from the underground music scene from the UK, Europe and afar.

Opening the series is Brighton based Retrospect. The Swung Selections label boss has been on a steady rise over the past few years and you will also recognise some of his productions from labels such as Ba Dum Tish imprints Punchline and his solo EP - Retrospect, in addition to Burnski's Constant Sound.

Zak takes you through an hour and a half exhibition of smooth grooves, seemlessly floating between house and garage, maintaining the shuffle and swing that has become synonomous with the Retrospect sound.

When she’s not busy shaping young minds in the classroom, Norfn is spinning house and downtempo at various venues across Northern England, with a particular focus on her current base in Leeds. Renowned as a bastion of house music, the city owes part of its contemporary musical heritage to collectives such as Butter Side Up and Louche, which have left a lasting influence on our guest.

Norfn’s passion for music dates back to her early years, her dad being a DJ himself when she was born. After years of digging and exploring a wide range of genres, she eventually got hooked on electronic music while studying at university in Leeds in the early 2010s. From there, her eclectic selections of house, disco and downtempo earned her a solid reputation within the local scene, securing gigs and sharing stages with acclaimed artists like Mall Grab, Interplanetary Criminal, and Skream. In addition to DJing, Norfn has been at the helm of the Run The Rhythm imprint since early 2022, curating a collection of high-quality deep house releases from underground UK producers such as Trippers Anonymous and Kerouac.

Norfn’s ER podcast is a celebration of her main influences, both old and new. Jacking drums, groovy basslines and sweet melodies sprinkle this well balanced journey through the realms of deep and tech house, offering a glimpse into her playful yet sophisticated sound.
