Time for another roundup of the best new Australian music I've come across in the last month or so.

Machine Translations - Broken Arrows
- This is amazing. It's the first time we've heard from Machine Translations in way too many years, and it's nothing short of triumphant. It starts like it's falling apart but then just comes together and explodes into life. Stunning.

Alex Party Cat - Hey Jimmy
- Really great acoustic punk pop, full of harmonies and regional accents. Not new this one, but I absolutely love it's simplicity.

Shaky Handz - Less Bored, More Poor
- Lo-fi craziness for those of you who remember Urusei Yatsura. Less boring, more awesome.

Violent Soho - Covered In Chrome
- This is another meaty, mighty cut from Violent Soho's recent tour de force of an LP, a sure-fire contender for Album Of The Year. Talk about coming back with a bang, this one's measured in megatons. Fantastic, muscly stuff.

The John Steel Singers - Everything's A Thread
- Been a couple of years since we last heard from this lot, and it's as giddy and barking as ever. Onstage, it's about a thousand people going crazy, but while on this new record there's still that strong sense of the unhinged, underneath there's some occasionally very precise bits of music. You still get the impression they'll go for your throat though.

Jeremy Neale - Swing Left
- If you've met me at all in the last year, you'll know I think this fine, fine chap can basically do no wrong musically. And he can't. C'mon, feel the Neale.

Bitch Prefect - Better Next Time
- Such lovely slackers. Everything feels like it's crumbling and held together by sticky tape, but together it's like a lo-fi milkshake - comforting, sweet and leaves you wanting another three more.

Go Violets - Wanted
- Being occasional musical compadres of Jeremy Neale gets you in the door with me every time. Being a flat-out knockout at bittersweet guitar pop is something else. If you're not on board with this Brisbane-ite bag of wonder, you're just not having enough fun in showbusiness.

Boomgates - Widow Maker
- Melbourne's Boomgates attract a very hipster crowd, but that's no reason to shrug them off. Despite the 99% certainty that any description of them includes the word 'jangle', the mood is smart, well-formed and cerebral, and in terms of musical quality and craft, there's little better in Australia for the discerning music nerd.

The Stevens - Hindsight
- There's a lot to love here - hints of Ride, Teenage Fanclub and some scratchy unknown garage band that only you can remember. This is from the LP getting its release in November and I'm looking forward to that, for damn sure.

Surf & Sway

Brisbane surf-rock quartet Go Violets have revealed the second single from their upcoming debut EP.  Recorded and produced by Sean Cook, ‘Josie’ takes the band in a new direction, expanding their sound to encompass a darker mood. The wry, distorted guitars, thumping rhythm, and ballad-like vocals carry any kind of melancholy away fast and hard.

Go Violets will launch Josie in June playing Thursday 13 June in Brisbane at the Black Bear Lodge, Saturday 15 June in Sydney at Brighton Up Bar and Thursday 20 June in Melbourne at the John Curtin Hotel.
