Roman Lindau has been a mainstay of the Berlin techno scene for many years, based in the home of European techno; he has become a regular on the circuit with his solo performances, and as part of the Fachwerk and Second State stable, performing at many of the label showcases across Europe. Roman’s DJ sets move seamlessly between the hard-edged techno sound to raw house sounds, these are the sets that he has become synonymous for, and which have taken him around Europe and further a field over the past decade.

6AM Guest Mix: Roman Lindau

The Big Bang happened in 2005 when Aleksandr aka @grad_u, a Vilnius-based DJ and producer who had been focused on drum’n’bass, accidentally heard Prospect II by Fluxion. It wasn’t the first time he heard the track but, at the right time and the right place, or, more accurately, the right depth, it pushed the artist to aim for fresh and dubby vibes and sounds. As the deal was done for the first release, the gradient of function U that Aleksandr studied at the moment gently became @grad_u. The gradient demonstrates the direction of increase of the function, so, consistently, it also paved the path of grad_u’s musical journey. But enough about maths. The sound of grad_u levitates in the golden middle between the ancient woods and the everyday asphalt jungle. The purity of these soundscapes is usually predetermined by recording the tracks on the tape, and inside these tapes, the producer encrypts both his family, everyday life, philosophical thoughts, space explorations, and some wild fantasies of how it all would sound live through a proper sound system. After a few successful releases on Knowone, grad_u was determined to launch a vinyl-only label himself. That’s how Redscale was born, and, since its first release in 2012, the catalogue has already reached the number RDSCL09. Grad_u produces all of the tracks released on Redscale. The producer also collaborates with likeminded imprints, Irenic being the latest (as of 2019) example of the dubby and timeless friendship. Having formed strong yet subtle muscles by performing live and DJ sets in various clubs and festivals in #Lithuania and nearby countries, for the past few years grad_u can in all sincerity be called an international artist. In the recent months, he has performed in cities like #Kyiv, #Helsinki, #Budapest, #Beijing, or #Tehran and travels are planned for the future. The faraway locations, unlike surroundings and new people met on the road have transformed into creative influences. The busy schedule of the artist hasn’t managed to keep him away from the studio and label errands; a few releases are now lined up to be listened in bedrooms and beyond.

For this week's 6AM Guest Mix, we present to you a Live set from Hans Berg, which he sent to us alongside the following words:

"When I play live I like to improvise a lot, see where the music and the sounds take me, and I follow that. Every set tends to be quite different, because it’s a search for me, to follow the sounds and see where they lead me.

I use modular synths, modular percussion, analog and digital drums, hardware and software synths, effect pedals, all with Ableton Live as a central hub." - Hans Berg

Playing with hyper-modern synthetic sounds, created from both hardware and software, hypnotically balancing between techno and house, shaping unexpected melodies, it is some of the most organic-inorganic music you will ever hear. His musical language is distinct - it is near impossible not to recognise a Hans Berg production upon hearing it. For the initial discovery phase of production he very much enjoys the element of letting go of control; in recent projects he has investigated what happens if he lets the machines (particularly his beloved modular synths) lead the way; finding rewards in the unexpected and unplanned; letting instincts and machinery go off the beaten track; not intervening until the second act, when the raw material is in his hands, when it is time to sculpt and fine-tune his creations.

Hans also runs the label UFO Station Recordings together with fellow Swede Johanna Knutsson, it is a platform for individual productions as well as for their duo Knutsson/Berg. Aside from recently having released two solo EP’s on Ian Pooley’s Montage imprint, his debut album, “Dream Maker”, came out on The Vinyl Factory in 2017, followed in 2019 by his second full-length achievement “Sounds of the Forest Forgotten” on 2MR. Conceived between Hans’ studios in the ultra-busy city of Berlin and the remote countryside of Sweden, as the title suggests, it gathers inspiration from human interaction with the wild, highlighting the connection and disconnection between technology and nature.

Since 2004 Hans has been collaborating with Nathalie Djurberg, scoring the Swedish visual artist’s installations and movies. Berg’s compositions extends Djurberg’s work with soundtracks and sonic environments, and their work has been shown in numerous solo- and group exhibitions worldwide.
