Meine Brüder, meine Schwestern, meine Freunde in Deutschland, ich grüße euch!
Wenn wir an den 1. Mai denken, denken wir an den weltweiten Kampf für arbeitende Menschen und die Arbeiterklasse auf der ganzen Welt. Sie sind auf dem Weg, sich wieder in Erinnerung zu bringen, sich Respekt zu verschaffen und Schritt für Schritte imstande zu werden, die Gesellschaft auf eine menschliche, humane, antikapitalistische Art zu organisieren, die frei von Unterdrückung ist.
Dieser Kampf geht weiter und das muss er auch, und so ist es überall auf der Welt, egal, ob wir in Deutschland oder in den Vereinigten Staaten oder auch in Indien, Afrika oder anderswo sind, wo Menschen zusammenkommen und arbeiten und kämpfen und sich organisieren und hoffen.
Wir müssen immer an den Klassenkampf denken und den Kampf darum, die Macht der Ausgebeuteten und Unterdrückten zu erweitern und die menschliche Gesellschaft radikal zu verändern.
Ich danke euch und ich wünsche euch allen einen militanten 1. Mai!

Mumia Abu-Jamal - greeting note to Revolutionary Mayday in Berlin

Driving along Highway 8 through the Ozarks you will see a beautiful landscape. Twisting roads and pines give way to valleys and farms. Maybe you are passing through, maybe you are going to stay at Rich mountain. You will not see the sharecroppers who broke their backs and toiled in this land. Not a century away and we have forgotten the blood that stained these valleys. The machine gun fire and billy clubs of bosses and police that beat this place and these people into submission.

Beyond this violence, there was a history of proud struggle and resistance. Now an empty horse ranch tucked away beneath the shadow of Rich Mountain and just on the edge of Mena's city line lies the foundation of a school, of Commonwealth College. While Commonwealth existed only briefly, from 1924-1940, its impact could be felt around the state, around the whole of the country. Its mission was to train workers, to educate and to teach them how to organize, but most of all to empower them, to give them the dignity and respect they had and have always been denied. 

This piece is a collection of quotes from students, educators, and union members associated with Commonwealth College. The so-called Commoners were socialists and communists who devoted themselves to the struggle against southern poverty and fascism. Arkansas has forgotten their story. The left has forgotten their story, we have forgotten their story. These pieces are not intended to tell the full history and nuance of Commonwealth College and its members, rather it is to give them their voices back. It is to listen and remember their story and their struggle.
