   Bavad Khair Baqi! (May this goodness last forever!) takes its title
from this evocative 17th century inscription found on the tomb of the
warrior-poet Zahiru’d-din Muhammad Babur. Although Babur is known
principally for his warfaring, he was also an architect and designer
responsible for constructing a number of fabulous gardens in Afghanistan
and India. At his request, Babur was buried in one of his own gardens on
a hillside overlooking Kabul near Oudh. Whilst the tomb itself remains
intact, the gardens were destroyed in 2001.

The form of Bavad Khair Baqi! is based on an Afghan instrumental
composition, the naghma-ye kashal, and the music is written using a rag
though the soundworld is clearly completely different from that of the
original. The work ends with this scale, heard clearly as it ascends
into the Light Garden (an ancient name for Afghanistan).  The work is
extremely difficult to perform not least because the violinist is
required to call out rhythmic texts as they play, - at
first just sighs, then humming, then syllables followed by the pitch
names of the rag in Sargam (used to transmit music from master to
student) finally calling out the name of the piece in Afghan.

This piece is the last in a cycle of three commissions to be premiered
in 2002, each sharing a similar theme, both musically and
programmatically. The Light Garden was performed by the Tate Ensemble in
Carnegie Hall, New York and  The Fourteenth Terrace, a clarinet
concerto, was premiered by Andrew Sparling and Lontano at the South Bank
Centre, London in September. Bavad Khair Baqi!  functions as a
conclusion to this set of pieces and ultimately should be heard in
context, as the musics journey from exposition to crisis to resolution.


   The piece has a double dedication - to Peter Sheppard Skaerved, and
(as with all the pieces in the trilogy) to John Baily and Veronica
Doubleday (two colleagues from England who have tirelessly campaigned
for the restrictions on music-making in Afghanistan to be lifted). John
has recently been able to return to Kabul, making music with friends
reunited after many years enforced exile from Afghanistan.

Graham Lynch has a PhD from King's College in London, as well as having studied at the Royal College of Music and privately with Oliver Knussen. His music has been performed, recorded and broadcast, by leading orchestras and ensembles in over thirty countries, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Orchestra of Opera North, and the BBC Singers. His works have been played in venues as diverse as the South Bank, Wigmore Hall, Merkin Hall New York, Paris Conservatoire, Palace of Monaco, and from the Freiberg Jazz Club to a cake shop in Japan, and everything in between. He is active as a composer, arranger, and educator.
