I'm Not A Fool

Rummaging through the archives, looking for a specific track - couldn't find it yet - I know I have it. But I came across this ditty and decided to do some mixing work on it.

It's from 1997 I think, original 4 track recording, I was having a blast playing the slide guitar and just felt this vibe coming, decided to record it.

I do not regret it for one bit :)

Lucy Lights

Hey…. I sleep like an old dog now that I am old. Although I wonder if I move my feet when I run in my dreams. And I did bark at the neighbor’s dog the other night. She was being noisy, so I joined in. Ha. Starlings are up in the old cottonwood now serenading the world, as the heat of the day is not yet upon us. But by midday they are usually gone. The heat is too intense. I think they head to the river to ride out the day. Maybe I should join them, like in the old days. Hanging down by the river, swimming and cooling off. I told a neighbor the other day, if he finds his political bumper sticker is inappropriately graffitied, it will be me who did it. Ha. And here I thought we were all in this together… how naive of me. Hee-hee. So back to the dreamlife of dogs… as with night and day, a lot of life can become an either or premise don’t ya think? I was always one to explore a middle ground by melding various ideologies together. Then I decided to become free of that paradigm view of life, and maybe see things as they were. Fascinatingly sad how polarized our species is, on practically everything that matters, and how unwilling we are to budge. So I wondered about that insofar as extricating myself from such nonsense, without that becoming just another polarized pursuit. As if you can’t tell by now, I am a dreamer. That does have its downside as there is a darker essence to all this babbling, as the song lyrics suggest, when the light becomes the dark. OK… the starlings just left for the river en mass. Ha ha. I have pondered about the relevance of dreams in my life for many years. But I wonder how relevant the rhyming of ‘stream’ with ‘dream’ was in ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat… as possibly a revelation into the nature of life? Or in some songs, rhyming is just a convenience of circumstance. Ha…. Are we really rowing ourselves gently along through our lives, in a daydreamy way of how we’d like to see the world? Or frantically chasing a dream on a flooded river, as we lose control of our leaky boat? Or maybe a little bit of both? Or maybe jumping ship to swim to shore? Maybe there is no boat at all? Sell Me Mrs Rita

Back in the late 80s and before the 1992 Gin Blossoms song, Mrs Rita was an oldschool Tempe AZ psychic card reader home business in a small old bungalow along University Ave in Tempe USA. The house still has a sign out front advertising physic card palm readings. Mrs Rita is a remnant of Tempe before chain breweries, condos, office buildings, and corporate commercial mania took over and demolished and rebuilt much of the town, beginning in the late 1980s. The era of Mrs. Rita was from back when sticky floor cinderblock bars and cheap pitchers of Miller Light combined with chicken wings and late night live-music to produce influential mainstream bands with worldwide radio play. Tempe was like a mini Seattle with dry heat an desert sun and much friendlier 90s grunge kids 

Tempe’s Gin Blossoms are still at it and play this tune about the hometown roadside psychic - and she’s still down the street from where Long Wongs was, where they played that song hundreds of times. And that song can be still found on the radio every single minute of every day ever since and I’m doing my best to keep it going, not tired of it yet - will never happen

* The band’s guitarist Jesse Valenzuela posted the listing for the property on his Facebook page when he found out. His only comment: "Mrs Rita house for sale." One of his friends posted, "sell me Mrs Rita..."

First of all thanks for dropping in on my page.
I sing, write songs and play rhythm guitar. I'm trying to learn a bit of bass. People tell me I've got a reasonable voice and I have a liking for melody. As I make my way with multi-track home recording, I'm hoping the the end result will be greater than the sum of the parts!
