Eleonor Bindman’s new arrangement of Bach’s Orchestral Suites for piano duet follows her widely admired recording of the six Brandenburg Concertos (GP777-78). Once again, the transcription reimagines Bach’s writing using the modern piano, in this case a Bösendorfer. Bindman and her Duo Vivace partner, Susan Sobolewski, draw upon the suite’s dance movements to suggest how Bach might have distributed the material, ordering them for maximum contrast, and succeeding in conveying the music’s vitality and beauty in a new medium.

LA ONDINA DE VACARES (English & Lyrics below)

La ondina de Vacares cuenta la historia de un desamor, de una obsesión. Es la leyenda de una mujer que quedó atrapada en el lado oscuro: dejó de creer y su amor se transformó en neurosis. Se inspira en la leyenda con el título: ‘La laguna de Vacares’, que se cuenta en dicha localidad de Sierra Nevada. Granada.

Cuenta la leyenda que en la Laguna de Vacares habita una ondina que, durante la noche, se aparece a los viajeros que allí se encuentran adoptando la figura de un pájaro. Una vez en su presencia se transforma en una bellísima mujer, que mediante engaños y palabras de amor los arrastra hacia el borde de la laguna sepultándolos bajo sus aguas, donde los devora. Dicen que la mujer-pájaro amó una vez a uno de estos viajeros y por ese amor, en lugar de matarlo, lo subió sobre sus alas transportándolo a su gruta, donde lo convirtió en su compañero y su amante. Pero pasado un tiempo, el joven descubrió los cadáveres de aquellos que habian sido devorados por la ondina y presa del terror, urdió un engaño escapando así de su poder. Desde entonces, la mujer no ha vuelto a perdonar a nadie y aun hoy, los viajeros evitan que la noche los sorprenda en las cercanías de la laguna, pues se dice que todo aquel que la vea estará irremediablemente condenado. This story is about a neurosis. Inspired by the legend ‘In the lake of Vacares’ (Sierra Nevada, Granada), this song tells the story of a wicked undine, who became visible to travellers overnight by adopting the figure of a bird. Once in their presence, that bird would turn into a beautiful woman. With the help of deceiving words of love, that woman would drag them to the edge of the lagoon and devour them. It is said that there was one time when the bird-woman fell for one of these travellers. Legend has it that she flew him to her cave where they became companions and lovers. After a while though, the young man came across the bodies of all the men who had been devoured by the undine, and terrified, he concocted a plan thus escaping from her power. Since then, she has never forgiven anyone, and even today, travellers avoid walking around the lake at night, for it is said that everyone who sees her shall inevitably be doomed.
