‘I Know’ by Esteban Cruz is a smooth deep house track with catchy vocal hooks and a funky bassline. The original is a dreamy track with soft jazzy piano chords, atmospheric synths and chill beats. Phaze Dee's remix turns the song into a soulful summer anthem with his signature sound of warm and jazzy chords, laid on top of a house beat.

On sunny days, which is most of them, the minerals within the volcanic black sand on New Zealand’s west coast beaches catch the beams and sparkle.

Light within the darkness: A mission statement for nineteen79, the vibrant duo kicking off this new Kiwi deep tech/minimal imprint.

These two tracks shimmer with possibilities, ripple with subtly undulating synth lines and washes of effects. It’s a classy way to start any new label.

Like a languorous afternoon at one of those beaches, lead track Pieces Of Me won’t be rushed, with multiple layers of music draped atop a rock-solid rhythmic foundation. Warm and wobbly, it’s powered by some clever percussive elements and strategically deployed stabs.

Sinking Feeling is equally enveloping, while being a tad more stripped back. It grooves off a largely single-note bassline pulse and insistent bongos until the euphoric breakdown, when the bass part is extended and the pads and flecks of vocal bring the feels for the final run home.

nineteen79 have some serious chops as producers and DJs in New Zealand and beyond. This EP signals the start of a new phase of their career and showcases the work of producers in complete control of their craft. Everything is considered, nothing is extraneous. It’s time to ride their wave.

We've all had a sliding door moment - but how many have led to almost two decades of production and DJ brilliance?
Darren Clark's came as a teenager, when he went shopping for a keyboard with his Dad in Auckland, New Zealand.
Had they not wandered into the shop where Paul Radley was working, Clark might not have made the connection that kickstarted a lifelong love of deep house - and drove him to become a perfection-crazed studio scientist seeking the ultimate formula for smooth, deep, soulful grooves.
With Radley as mentor, Clark set about discovering the galaxy of star producers dominating the crates of discerning DJs in the early years of the 21st century.
Schooled up on the likes of Ron Trent, Charles Webster, Moodymann, Playin 4 the City and Franck Roger, Clark developed a distinctive style - on the decks and at the mixing desk.
His debut EP was on Omi Tutu, the New Jersey label run by Lou Gorbea and part of the legendary Louie Vega's family of imprints.
Back home, Clark was one of the foundation artists on Auckland's Grass Green Recordings and contributed multiple releases to fellow Kiwi label Them On The Hill.
He's continued to hone his style - and geek out over analogue gear - favouring sample-based work characterised by impeccable production and a very specific sense of space and sound.
Clark's DJ sets, meanwhile, have become refreshingly eclectic - with the ultra-underground house sounds that became his trademark at Auckland's respected Mum's The Word parties growing to include something of a Balearic flavour.
