Gavin Merritt a.k.a. Grateful Funk was born in Atlanta and has his roots in the town of Pensacola, FL. You could say making music is in his blood, with his father being a DJ who has worked with notable acts such as the Allman Brothers, the Grateful Dead, and George Clinton---there’s a reason for the Funk in Grateful Funk. His humble beginnings as a DJ began playing house parties in Tallahassee and Pensacola, and he has now been booked all over Florida from Pensacola to Orlando. Sometimes playing solo or collaborating with other underground artists including live drummers, saxophonists, bassists, and guitarists, his sound is unique and diverse and his beats will make you dance. His latest project is Next Level Sound featuring a live drummer and bassist whose performances are inspiringly improvisational and refreshingly new and different every time. Keeping the good vibes going into the wee hours of the morning is his specialty with a range tastes from middle eastern alien dub to glitch hop to melodic dubstep and everything in between, there’s something for everyone at a Grateful Funk show. He spins his positivity live with an array of gadgets sure to please the mind and the senses, and is constantly in the studio as well always working on new projects with local and regional artists. Always learning from other musicians, he has skillfully integrated new techniques to keep the flow fresh and funky. Keep your eye on this kid because he is going places, having shared the stage with such acts as Kraddy, Young Hedons, FLT RSK, Up Until Now, Greenhouse Lounge, Sir Charles, Speyeral, Eddie Gold, RJD2, Alex B., A Vision, Pensacobra, Aric Wilde, Mingle, Mick Swagger, Ben Danner, and Scatch-a-holix.
