Category 4 is a monthly broadcast concept from Michael Brunner [ @four4 ] for Great Circles Radio.

Each episode is broken into four segments, which are connected in some fashion, but routinely unique in many others. This allows for the drawing of comparisons between otherwise disparate concepts, while simultaneously creating enough creative restrictions to focus the musical selections.

The 13th episode comes to us courtesy of Justin Gibbon, founder of Great Circles.

We invite our listeners to guess these categories during the show.
As an added incentive for participation, the first person to guess the categories during the broadcast will be eligible to win a prize. Each month brings new categories and prizes.

The theme for episode 13 was -- Rhythm of Language of Rhythm

From the artist: "For this show, through selections that are largely focused on percussion and voice, I explored some of the distinctive rhythms - both simple and complex - a traveler would hear while moving about the Caribbean and South America. I imagined someone traveling by sea, songs from each location fading in the distance as they embark for the next, a swirl of audio memories continuing to play in their minds. "

Marissa Mele is back with Westov Temple, in the mix for a globetrotting showcase of the sounds that brought their paths together. 

Westov Temple is the production and DJ alias of Justin Gibbon, Founder and Creative Director of Great Circles – a Philadelphia-based music platform that includes a record label, online radio station, record shop, and live events. As a DJ and radio host as well as a lifelong musician,  Justin’s selections reflect his continuous exploration of sounds ranging from the universal and emotionally engaging to the most unusual and experimental.

"Marissa and I met in 2021 and connected over a shared passion for new and archival recordings emerging from Africa, Asia, South America and beyond. Knowing that Marissa and I are often listening to a lot of the same music in that realm - and because my mixes and radio shows are typically more instrumental - I decided to wander in a different direction, and I've selected records that all incorporate vocals in some way. Most of the selections are from the past year or so, and many of them are among my favorite records of 2023. There’s a reflective, wintery mood here, as this mix was recorded as the sun faded on New Year’s Eve - though it’s not without its lighter moments, including an optimistic celebration of the arrival of spring."
