The theme for episode 20 was -- 2xLP Songs by Album Side

From the artist:  "When Mike asked me to do this mix, I thought it sounded like a fun, yet potentially challenging project. I kicked around a handful of ideas, but the one that stuck with me was "what if the mix was composed of nothing but songs that appear on 2xLP's? And, what if I only used songs from Side A on Chapter 1, and so on?" So, I pulled all my double LP's that I have here in Berlin, and started a layout. It immediately became a super fun endeavor! I also recognized that it was an extremely nerdy concept, but I truly wanted someone to guess it. With that in mind, I took to using songs that most people knew in hopes that the listener might think of where these songs were placed on their respective albums. People who know me best know that I've been a life-long obsessive when it comes to the concept of an album format. Like, the actual programming of an album, the way the songs run together in their respective order, etc. So, like any good DJ set, I wanted this collection of songs to tell a story somehow by programming them using the format outlined above.

Unfortunately, I messed up a bit and had to alter the final archived mix just a tiny bit. When compiling the mix, the Aphex Twin song that was supposed to be in chapter 2 got moved to chapter 1, but that was an easy fix. The other issue was that I used "My Body is a Cage" by Arcade Fire in Chapter 4. While that song is the final song on the "Neon Bible" LP, it falls on side C because side D is just an etching on the vinyl and contains no music. DOH!!! So, in the interest of sticking to the theme, I removed it from the mix entirely.

Influences: Music played on the radio in Florida when I was growing up -  freestyle, electro like Kraftwerk + Cybotron, Miami bass, hip hop and rap. Later on I was listening to electronic music from Warp + Rephlex labels. I love Autechre (listen to their Dekmantel podcast and it will all make sense), Luke Vibert, LFO, Meat Beat Manifesto. Then there was the music coming out of Miami from around 2000 that soaked in - Phoenecia, Secret Frequency Crew, Infiltrate, lots of talented djs who had crazy record collections.

Affiliations/Residencies/Projects: I'm affiliated with Schematic from Miami. It’s a prolific label that releases all types of electronic music, first started with IDM and glitchy electro but it's much more than that. Not only the music, but the people I've met through that label have been very influential in terms of friendship and learning about music. I’m currently making a home in Lima, Peru and figuring out where I fit creatively in the community there. I have the beginnings of a radio project in the works.

Favorite Quote: Shh I’m listening to reason.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: I've had a lot of fun organizing music events. It's very rewarding, and not as hard as you think. If you have an idea, you shouldn’t have to wait for some other promoter to make the party and execute your vision, you can. It's an opportunity to bring your friends/djs/artists together to play off of each other. The only pre-req is that you have to have some peeps in your town that are interested in going out to hear music. If you keep it cheap - more people will come out and try it. Also, I know its cliche, but - keep doing what you love and remind yourself why you do this. Don’t get too discouraged, and try not to let your insecurities get the best of you (we all have them). Maybe you don’t quite fit in with what's trending or you don't get the time slots you want, or booked as much as this or that person. I remind myself that I dj and do events to keep good music alive, especially if my friends are making it. Keep it moving, connect the dots. If you don't, who will?

Ahead of her set at the Brooklyn techno institution’s 16th-anniversary party, the Schematic affiliate @unjust steps in for a mix at our NYC studio.

Hailing from Florida, where she forged a bond with legendary electronic label Schematic, and having spent many years in Brooklyn, Unjust currently resides in Lima, Peru. During her time in New York, she was an early resident at the Bunker and an occasional promoter of parties. As the show steps into 2019, Unjust joins Bryan Kasenic for a mix of gliding techno gems, part of the Bunker NY’s celebration of its 16th year as a multifaceted force in techno.

Unjust (Ivy Feraco) is our guest for our 14th mix in the series.  Hailing from South Florida, her first public gigs were in Miami around 2001 - on the radio station WVUM (thanks to Electric Kingdom) and at parties she threw with the label Schematic.  After that she spent a good amount of time living in NYC where she was a resident for The Bunker NY parties in the LES, and played at highly respected underground events there, like the Capriccio parties. She now lives in Lima, Peru, and is finding her way to support the music community there. She recently threw a party in the center of Lima with djs from a local crew Villa Bass and Erika of Interdimensional Transmissions.

In her own words: 
"I like a lot of different styles in electronic music. I like experimental techno and IDM, electro, house, disco, italo, Miami bass and hip hop, drum and bass, industrial, and all the hybrids of those, so a lot of times I find it hard to decide on one style… unless the party calls for one in particular. I really admire dj sets that have a cohesive sound where all the music selections build and create an aesthetic and I aspire to pull the same thing off, but for me it can be difficult to pick a direction.

On top of that, I don’t want to beat a listener over the head unless they are at a party at peak time. For this podcast I tried to weave in mostly house that has lot of vocal samples and weird messages (I love samples) to create cohesiveness. I tried to build it slowly and play each song in their entirety to make it more of a listening experience, but it does get hype. 

And it’s even better to me that I could fit in music from friends."
