Where did the time go?

199 releases and 10 years after label owner Tomcraft released the label-founding anthem Great Stuff with Eniac, Great Stuff Recordings proudly presents its 200th release. One of Resident Advisor&#8217;s Top 20 Most Charted Labels of all time, they&#8217;ve had countless underground and overground successes alike, blending the two sides of the commercial coin in a way few others have managed for such a duration.

Harking back to a funkier time in house music, its hard-grooving bassline and chunky beats provide the perfect counterweight to its euphoric melodies. Those Depeche Mode-esque, trance-tinged breakdown chords pointed a finger to the future of stadium-sized house, while gliding orchestral and sampled strings alike added yet more class. Epic &#8216;80s rock style guitars completed the package, all woven into nine minutes of electronic epicness. Remastered in all its glory here, it&#8217;s sounding fresher than ever.

Three killer remixes bring this 2002 classic up to date. D-Nox &amp; Beckers keep things simple and respectful, with delicate synth arpeggios and the original&#8217;s glorious strings paired with a warm bassline and consistent rhythmic energy. Alex Kenji &amp; NKDj up the bounce factor with offbeat stabs doing battle with those string blasts and seriously pumping beats, while all manner of huge FX and builds bring the track up to fever pitch. Prince Club round off with a more demure effort, skippy classic house beats and rugged low-slung bass building a dark atmosphere around the sampled strings. All three remixes bring something different to this classic and make this milestone package an unmissable piece of house music history.

Returning to Great Stuff after his huge Inside Me on Great Stuff Grooves 6 earlier this year, Italian talent Ruben Mandolini brings another banger to the label in Automatic. Having also appeared on Toolroom, Defected and Riva Starr&#8217;s Snatch! in 2013, he&#8217;s on serious form.

Automatic centres around a turgid, hard-jacking beast of a slinky techno groove, with punchy, heavily swung beats thumping away around atonal womps of sub bass. It barely needs anything more to make it an irresistible proposition, but Mandolini&#8217;s chopped and screwed vocals, epic pads and breakbeats in the breakdowns and warped pitch-bending synths take this to another level entirely. Seductive, dirty and cool, it&#8217;s everything you could want from a cutting-edge tech romper.

Piemont are left with a formidable task on the remix - but hey, this is Piemont we&#8217;re talking about. Throwing a load of metallic percussion, a rugged bassline and much FX trickery into their kit bag, they set off on a mission to pump the track up into something with a more atmospheric, hypnotic and haunting feel - and succeed in very impressive fashion.

New York techno legend Bryan Cox dons his PHNTM guise once again for the latest slice of Great Stuff, returning to the imprint after his 2011 collaboration with Christian Cambas, Inferno. With releases on imprints like Toolroom, 1605 Music Therapy, Blu Fin and Hotfingers, his alter-ego has been blazing a trail through the world of new skool tech in recent years.

Out Of Africa falls just the right side of moody, with its brooding, dramatic tones and bombastic tribal percussion. With plenty of chunk for your Euro, it layers percussion in thick layers, driven by droning atonal bass and unrelenting rhythm. Ominous horns sound at key moments of tension during the track, creating a dramatic slab of dancefloor gold.

You can&#8217;t hold a good thing down, and that&#8217;s exactly why the acclaimed Great Stuff Grooves series is back with another four hot slices of house and tech this month. Drawing on producers from across the world, it&#8217;s another feisty package. 

English talent Filthy Rich continues his fine run of form (see a recent contribution to Hot Creations&#8217; Hot Waves compilation) with the infectious Drop This. Drawing heavily on house heritage once again, he welds woozy organs to head-nodding skippy beats and a plump, acid house-tinged bassline. Those held string notes in the breakdown hark back to the mid-&#8216;90s, and highlight this track&#8217;s succinct blend of old and new.

Hungary&#8217;s Muzzaik were once known for their tribal and progressive grooves, but Face It is pumping straight-up house music through and through. Again, there&#8217;s a nod to a bygone era with diva vocal snippets, filtered disco loops and big cymbal hits, but it&#8217;s all brought bang up to date with their immense production prowess. The low end undulates wildly, with occasional Daft Punk-esque descending bassline fills, and the breaks build things up to giddy heights with huge snare builds and hypnotic synth motifs. A very large track indeed, and one for those who like their filtered funk with a little techy urgency.

Don&#8217;t be fooled by Deepdisco&#8217;s name - Put Your Sunglasses On is a pure twisted techno romp. A stomping, heavily-swung groove is what this track&#8217;s all about, with just a dash of tribalism thrown in. A delicate piano scale provides contrast in the breaks, while subtly growling synths and dissonant sounds do battle in the main sections. An absolute beast of a track, it combines heads-down funk with just the right amount of deft little flourishes.

Bongo Jack rounds off the package with PHNTM - the percussion he gets his name from lacing a sidewinder of a bassline and afro guitar licks. A huge disco loop is filtered into submission before finally revealing itself in glorious fashion, the urgent percussion driving things along potently. A rasping synth motif and more bongo rhythms complete the high-energy feel, with some huge builds taking the track to fever pitch.
