BILBONI Darkoctaves Guestmix Techno 006 (Free Download)

A respected regular on Figure / Figure SPC, from his timeless creations alongside 
Dimi Angelis, to his stunning three part ‘SPC A’, or his more recent collaboration with Markus Suckut as ‘JSMS’ - the prolific techno producer Jeroen Search returns. 

Encapsulating a trademark sound built from from classic analog hardware, fused with modern production techniques, Search offers up three upfront new tracks, backed with two snaking, distinctly modern remixes by London based techno mainstay Ø [Phase].

What begins as a casual reduced jam then evolves into an ensnaring, tense workout as ‘Momentum’ gathers exactly that - elevating and maintaining the tension. ‘The Future is Ours’ then sees Search at his meanest, with a grating, killer hook winding itself around his perfectly controlled drum machines. Precision tools for the floor from one of the masters of live, party-angled Techno. The digital bonus track ‘Remains’ sees Jeroen in a more subdued zone, working a hypnotic, Millsian line over a carefully reduced drum pattern.

Token records regular and long-running producer Ø [Phase] then remixes ‘Momentum’, turning two tripping, reduced versions leading the focus towards subliminal messages and repetitive structures. Remix 1 takes the main theme and freaks it out, swimming in a glassy pool of snappy percussion, while Remix 2 allows us to get carried away on the polar winds for a more icy, chilling version.

Alan’s new single on Drumcode demonstrates exactly why Alan Fitzpatrick is a powerhouse within the techno scene. ‘The Tetra’ will enrapture the dance floor from the off with it’s brooding nature and syncopated claps. It pushes forwards with glistening highs before more melodic stabs join the equation and slowly the beautiful melodic phrase partakes in this outstanding piece of work. ‘We Are Forever Young’ finishes off the single with a slow burning after hour’s vibe that will keep the clubbers nodding. The third and final track ‘1992’ takes us back and has a tougher more energetic feel to it. With crunchy drums, a melodic synth and a catchy vocal hook this record is another Alan Fitzpatrick masterpiece.

Joris Voorn returns with another sterling release on his Green label. I Ran The Zoo is a lesson in stripped-back contrast and subtlety, with an acidic groove bleeping away over driving percussion and delicate atmospherics in its Digital Version, the tension growing with every thud of the kick drum. A dizzying breakdown raises the bar with snare rolls and dramatic pads, with the wide-open space therein soon sucked back into the void when the beat drops back in.

Meanwhile the special Analog Version harks back to Joris’ techno sound of old. The throbbing kick and bass and acid blips are set against rising, white-noise drenched synth swells and simple percussion to create something moody and tough yet teasingly pared back.

These two heads-down mixes make this release a stark contrast to some of his more melodic, riff-fuelled releases of late, once again demonstrating Joris' endless versatility and shape-shifting abilities.

After solemnly closing out the SPC-series in 2016, Jeroen Search hands in his second EP of the year for Figure. Carrying his signature style, these tunes embody the live-recording feel he is known for, perfectly executed and arranged in clean-cut layers.

Both tracks on the A-side feature big and beefy beats, their generous sub-range creating ample space for the juxtaposing elements to effectively slice through, whether it be the penetrating bleeps of ‘Deduced’ or the piercing rides on ‘Interval’.

Things get bumpy on the flip when the rugged but undeniable groove of ‘Steady Pulse’ firmly stands its ground against repeated onslaughts of flailing percussion. The jolty rhythms and tinkling loops of ‘Endless Circles’ may seem like it being the odd one out, but unexpectedly merge into an intricate mesh of sounds, making for a most memorable closer to this jam-packed EP.
