Here is the story behind the first mix of this podcast "La La Land- Costa Rica". I wanted this first mix to give you a history of Costa Rica and also of Latin America.

The first track "Humano" by @lido-pimienta Lido Pimienta (remixed by @el-buho El Búho), sets the tone for the whole mix, as it has a lot to do with racism in the Americas, specifically in Latin America. The message is clear: We are all human!

In the middle of the mix is a track called "Barú" by @chanchaviacircuito (El Búho Remix), a term that dates back to colonial times and derives from the Doraces, an indigenous group from western Panama, near the Térraba River in Costa Rica. That's the name of the neighborhood where I live!

This mix also includes some Costa Rican artists. The second-to-the-last track was released by @planetibiza Planet Ibiza many years ago. It is by @colorica Colorica, two producers, one from Costa Rica and the other from California USA.

The last piece is one of Costa Rica's most beautiful national hymns called "Patriótica Costarricense". It is performed by the National Symphony Orchestra and the Youth Symphony Orchestra along with the National Symphonic Choir of Costa Rica, which is the choir I sang in a few years ago!

Each selection is significant and I hope this series gives you a wonderful welcome to Costa Rica full of fiery, danceable and provocative Latin vibes. Or, as we say, "Puro Sabor"!

Aquí les dejo la historia detrás de esta primera mezcla de este podcast “La La Land- Costa Rica”. Quería yo que esta primera mezcla les diera una historia de Costa Rica y también de América Latina.

El primer tema “Humano” de Lido Pimienta (remezclado por El Búho), establece el tono para toda la mezcla, ya que tiene mucho que ver con el racismo en las Américas, específicamente en América Latina. El mensaje es claro: ¡Todos somos humanos!

En medio de la mezcla hay un tema llamado "Barú", un término que se remonta a la época colonial y deriva de los Doraces, un grupo indígena del occidente de Panamá, cerca del río Térraba en Costa Rica. Así se llama el barrio donde yo vivo!

Esta mezcla también incluye algunos artistas costarricenses. El penúltimo tema fue lanzado por Planet Ibiza hace muchos años. Es de Colorica, dos productores, uno de Costa Rica y el otro de California EEUU.

La última pieza es uno de los himnos nacionales más bellos de Costa Rica llamado “Patriótica Costarricense”. Está interpretado por la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional y la Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil junto con el Coro Sinfónico Nacional de Costa Rica, que es el coro en el que canté yo hace algunos años!

Cada selección es significativa y espero que esta serie les dé una maravillosa bienvenida a Costa Rica llena de vibraciones latinas ardientes, bailables y provocativas. O, como decimos nosotros, “Puro Sabor”!

Nothing compares to playing in a 35-degree weather with a Brazilian samba school band. Nothing. But this recording comes pretty close to how it all was in Cluj, Romania. This set was inspired by those Brazilian marimbas and drums played live while I did my thing. It then evolves into a rather dark mix with a broad palate of eclectic rhythms that don't fix into one box. And of course, the ever-present tribal sounds are there, like my shadow they will always follow. 

I couldn't help myself and played the Sun Sun Damba edit of Peter Power again (again, again!). I just couldn't help it. <3 Endless love for that track.  Pajaro lindo de la madrugada! Pajaro lindo de la madrugahh! Sun sun!

Jiony shares an exotic voyage blending in a variety of elements that create a rhythmic cadency. It is complemented by melancholic melodies to form a dark but jazzy atmosphere.

Jiony is the co-founder of a Mexico City based label VAA. There’s a certain diversity from which Jiony’s music takes place - from nu-jazz to tango, going through trip hop, funk and sometimes cumbia. His live acts are multifaceted. In its simplest version, he plays live sets using an APC controller, and also adds instruments and live looping - even a complete band.
