A Melodeon player composing and performing modern contemporary folk music

Malc and Gill have more than 90 years experience between them of singing on the folk scene, and although they have only been performing as a duo for about ten years, have been an integral part of the Midlands folk scene singing solo and in various other line-ups since the sixties!

Malc Gurnham is an excellent singer, plays quite a variety of instruments (most of them with strings!) and is a highly regarded solo performer. 
He also can be found running singarounds and acting as an MC at many festivals throughout the country. 
He has played in numerous bands as well as a soolist, in both the "popular" and folk music scene, currently in addition to singing with Gill also is part of GLORISHEARS CEILIDH BAND, and THE MEN IN BLACK (the only Folk/60's band specially put together for a Folk Festival!) latterly he has also played in THE KATHERINE FEAR BAND, and appeared on recordings by a number of well know performers including the late JOHNNY COLLINS 
As well as performing Malc promotes many folk events - he is Festival Director of BEDWORTH FOLK FESTIVAL and the Organiser of BEDWORTH FOLK CLUB, one of the longest running clubs in the country, runs his own small recording studio FAT SAM MUSIC, and has presented his own Folk Music show on BBC Local Radio.
Gill Gilsenan started singing at The Corner House Folk Club in the 70's (Run at the time by Malc) with her partner and later to be husband BRYAN SUNDERLAND, as a duo they became quite popular around the Midlands folk scene under the collective name of "THE FLYING SUNDERLANDS" performing close harmony Contemporary songs and traditional songs, particularly those from Bryans native North-East of England, and regularly visited Newcastles' popular Bridge Folk Club. Sadly Bryan died in the 90's, and although frequenting the local folk venues Gill did very little singing for some years. She met up with Ace guitarist DAVE BENNETT and formed both a musical and personal partnership and performing as SPIRIT MEASURE became an integral part of the the Coventry Folk Music scene, running clubs and sessions at a multitude of venues around the City. 
Over the last few years Gill has got more involved in Malcs folk music promotions and now helps look after much of the administration of Bedworth Folk Festival.

As a duo Malc & Gill, not surprisingly with their backgrounds, have a wide diversity of material, both traditionally and contemporary based, and ranging from clever harmony work to humour and even a serious ballad or two, performed either a-capella or with Malcs pleasantly understated guitar accompaniment. 
Much of their material uses their own unique approach to arranging, and adaptation of tunes to help emphasise the meaning or sentiment of the lyrics.

Thee Deadtime Philharmonic - Biography

Based in the ex-mining town of Swadlincote, South Derbyshire, Murdoch's songwriting reflects the carnage left behind in a town still on its knees from Thatcher’s strangle hold on the working classes.

Relentless gigs all over the UK (including all the major cities and the nowhere towns where most bands don't bother to go) have gained the band an ever-growing army of dangerously devoted fans. Their militant working class stance caught the eye of Clash legend Mick Jones, who took Deadtime out on the road as special guests, and Murdoch has since recorded a single and album with The Tribunes (out on Honest Jons Records and featuring Mick Jones’s rhythm section from Carbon/Silicon). The Clash connection continued when Strummerville (The Joe Strummer Foundation For New Music) invited Deadtime into the family by funding their first single, double a-side 'Moths/Spine' with producer Paul Tipler (Idlewild, 80s Matcbox, Dr Feelgood,Elastica). Strummerville also added 'Spine’ (demo) to their prestigious DIY download page, where it held the No.1 slot for nine months in the Strummerville chart. The band have also worked with other producers such as Brett Shaw (Unkle, Florence and the Machine, Gorillaz) and David Glover (Self Esteem, Slow Club, Richard Hawley) Among the band’s other supporters was the late Michael Davis of the legendary MC5. 

Deadtime continue to receive outstanding reviews for their high octane, raw, emotive live shows. International and national radio airplay for the band has come from Don Letts, Jarvis Cocker, Janice Long and Tom Robinson (BBC Introducing/BBC6) to name a few. Deadtime have also appeared on Channel 4 (Strummerville Sessions) Russia Today (Going Underground) and had Michael Socha from This is England/Being Human appear in their 'Bad Lad' and direct the video for 'Hardlines'.
