1.	What was your familiarity with the music of the Philippines before you began researching this mix? Did you make it to the Philippines on your tour of Asia?

Sadly, I didn’t make it to the Philippines in my previous Asia tour, but I did get the chance to go digging with close friend Glenn Ellingsen (Hot Wax Soundsystem) in Hong Kong who is known for his collection of Filipino soul and funk. Glenn was kind enough to introduce me to the incredible French DJ and crate digger Moore Brahms living in Hong Kong, who runs Gila Records – a label specialising in reissuing and releasing rare grooves from southeast Asia. This is where I first fell in love with Asian soul music, and I’ve been collecting these rare gems ever since! 

2.	What did you learn in the research process? How would you describe Filipino music, as you understand it?

I discovered a huge love for 60s/70s soul music in the Philippines – some of these artists were treated like royalty. The music is heavily inspired by western soul and funk, but I love the distinctive, passionate expression in their voices, especially in the Filipino language. Every word sounds like it’s coming straight from the soul of these singers (as all good soul music should) but there’s an extra buttery feeling when hearing these lyrics. The overdriven guitar tones and the paradise flare to every track seem to be key themes of Filipino music to me. 

3.	The mix you recorded for us charts a course through some sweet pop and soul ballads and ends up in a characteristically GREETINGS disco mood (a “lovers’ deluxe”, as you described it to us). What guided your track selection?

I’ve always wanted to cultivate a mix like one of my all-time favourites: Hunee’s “In Our Time (Mix for Air / Be With Records)” Mix. It’s a perfectly crafted adventure of love songs and it’s an emotional journey. While researching these wonderful Filipino ballads, I started finding some of the funkiest and wonkiest disco beats I’ve ever heard and knew I had to incorporate them into this journey somehow… Flow has always been more important to me than showing off bangers or forcing the party tunes in the wrong moment, so this took some lengthy planning to figure out the perfect progression. 

4.	There are a mix of English-language and Filipino-language tracks in here. Did you get a feel for how different cultural influences have shaped the music of the Philippines?

Yeah, I found the mix of languages in these songs so fascinating and did do some more reading into why. There was a movement of Disco Fever over the Philippines in the late 70s which resulted in many covers of classic western hits in the Filipino language. This inspired a new movement of OPM (Original Pilipino Music) known as “the Manila Sound” that blended English and Filipino languages. A lot of bands and songwriters of the time modelled themselves after famous American funk bands and mixed English and Filipino lyrics so they could create internationally accessible music.

5.	Were there any particularly useful resources for your research? Any people, labels, publications or other sources you’d like to shout out?

As I mentioned, Brahms from Gila Records really opened my eyes with his “Pencak Killa” compilation series full of these wonderful rare East Asian grooves. I also found a wonderful little blog – pinoygrooves.com – that has an extensive catalogue of rare grooves from the Philippines accompanied by some wonderful stories and info on the history of the region’s music.

Here is 90 mins of Greetings and myself closing out our 'Slow It Down, Baby' party a few weeks back. It's been a while since we could comfortably run records all night. There's just something about greasing up plastic discs with our mits that really helps to immerse you as a DJ and a front row punter.

After a few hours of incredible tunes from the Area 3000 DJ's (3rd Orbit + Mothafunk), Luma, Afrodisiac and Hannah D, the room was already buzzing. A lovely respectful crowd locked in the groove the whole night, we were all so stoked with the punters and so grateful to be playing to such a receptive crowd.

For years now, GREETINGS (Head of Boots & Legs Records) and Slumdog (Solstice, Glamorama) have hosted a series of Boot shaking, Gala fit parties embracing the Disco, House, and Italo we all crave. Pushing against the trend of fast beats and crazy bright screens at the rave, The Boot Gala harks back to the Studio 54 era (albeit a kitschy version) that sees a full runway, lights show, and sparkly gold & silver decor that invites partygoers of all creeds and backgrounds to dance the night away surrounded by the best of the best.

The Boot Gala has seen the likes of Skatebard (NOR) Donald’s House, Adriana, DJ Luv You, Myles Mac + many more grace the stage. Tilt Shift sits firmly left of center, a difficult-to-label square peg that unintentionally fails to fit a pigeonhole. Borrowing from the photography term, Tilt Shift refers to two different types of movement, a selective focus with a large depth of field used to control perception. This can be applied to our music policy, tilting the vertical axis resulting in a sharp area of focus without reducing the depth of field. The selective focus that can be achieved by both tilting and shifting movements, It's compelling because the effect is different from that which you may have become accustomed to. This movement is often used to avoid the convergence of parallel lines, or as we have come to think of it, it’s where the lines blur.

Based in Melbourne, Greetings is the moniker of Jack Grazie. When he is not playing in the cities best venues, he works full time in music production and running record labels. After label managing the high flying house imprint clipp.art, his attention is now focused on a brand new project, the Boots n Legs record label which will focus on 80s synth-pop and Italo gems. The new label’s first release will drop on the 15th of May, and they will also have a launch party on the 29th of June at Whitehart Bar. 

Greetings don’t just focus on nu-wave sounds and have a knack for unearthing deep, warm house. DJ Bone recently played at XE54 and Greetings were tasked with warming up the dancefloor. And he did just that, laying down a fresh vinyl-only set featuring only Australian artists. If you weren’t there, you could listen back as we have the full recording. This is the sort of quality you would expect from an international DJ.

Mix of the Week #309: GREETINGS - Pavarotti's Dreams

Went through the archives and decided to upload this set I played at Pistil in Seoul, South Korea as part of my Asian tour I did in July 2019. Playing the show with my now good friends Jesse You(Treehouse / Wavecord Seoul, Jaezae(Tucan Discos)and Daniel Schine Lee was an eye-opening experience into how the Korean people dance, move and connect on the dancefloor. Pistil was one of the highlights in between hitting up spots like Seoul Community Radio, Salon 10, Fauve Radio and Hong Kong Community Radio in Hong Kong. Much love to the friends I made over there, I will be back again soon.

Returning from his Asian tour last year, GREETINGS has found influence in the cities of the east. Where city pop blends with house jams in the late night and Italo disco peaks a party.
