This is a place for documenting my ongoing bi-weekly writing challenge: to write and post publicly something of musical worth every two weeks. To adhere to that timeline despite all the usual excuses!

So here's the deal: This is my music page, where I will be sharing the music I've been writing for years with people. The result will hopefully be finding a few people to collaborate with and help me play this music live.

This classical music podcast explores the history and lives of some of western classical music's most famous composers and musicians. Classical music is filled with very colorful personalities and riddled with drama of all kinds, from political intrigue to failed romances and everything in between.  Through the course of the show, we will discuss composers and musicians from the distant past all the way to the present, beginning with the greatest, JS Bach.

(Ali Berkok - piano/accordion, Pete Johnston - bass, Jake Oelrichs - drums/percussion, Mike Smith - electronics) Formed in the autumn of 2012, these musicians have played with each other in various combinations in numerous groups in Toronto over the last ten years, including Muskox, Arkana Music, See Through Trio, and the Toronto Jazz Orchestra. This quartet emerged out of a shared desire to create extended improvised musical structures in which the instruments would function as equal partners in the ensemble texture. Drawing on a range of influences including jazz, dub reggae, American minimalism, electronic music, and punk rock, Aurochs seeks to expand the traditional palette associated with this instrumentation. To this end, Aurochs focuses on developing sustained, gradually unfolding ensemble improvisations. Aurochs's wide open approach to music-making means that they never end up with the same song structure twice.
You can catch Aurochs playing at the Tranzac on the final Friday of every month, at 7:30p.m.
