The 'Big Wing' ended the 2021 Battle of Britain Air Show at Duxford. A single Spitfire did aerial manoeuvres while the formation of 11 Spitfires and 4 Hurricanes grouped up for several flypasts. 

Recorded at the front of the spectators area with the binaural Sennheiser Ambeo Smart Headset going into an iPod touch, using the iRig recording app. For comparison with the homemade SASS rig I had further back (also uploaded).

The 'Big Wing' ended the 2021 Battle of Britain Air Show at Duxford. A single Spitfire did aerial manoeuvres while the formation of 11 Spitfires and 4 Hurricanes grouped up for several flypasts. 

Recorded about 60m back from the front of the spectators area, using a homemade stereo ambient sampling system (SASS) with Primo em172 capsules, going into a Zoom F6. For comparison with the binaural Sennheiser Ambeo Smart Headset which I used to get a closer recording (also uploaded).

I placed two LOM MikroUsi mics on different branches of a hedge to catch the blackbird and robin that hang around there. It wasn't a true stereo setup, I just used two mics to increase the chances of a close recording. I decided to keep this section in stereo, because the robin investigates the mic on the right channel (lower down the hedge) and performs a bit of subsong, then at the end he goes directly over to the left channel mic and continues his song. I like to think he was helping me set the levels!

The climax of a dawn chorus at Shapwick Heath nature reserve on the Somerset levels. I nightingale comes to the end of his shift after singing throughout the night. The rest of the birds have only recently woken up and started singing. Cuckoos, bitterns, and a variety of warblers, tits, thrushes and wetland species.

A group of northern lapwings (vanellus vanellus) performing an aerial display right in front of my microphones on a wetland site in mid-Sweden. They dive and loop in the air screeching with their iconic "peewit" song. At moments, you can hear their buzzing wingbeats. Towards the end, an individual lands near the microphones and begins alarming, possibly directed at the microphones (though they were very small and discreetly placed), a nearby predator, or another intruding bird.

A Nightingale in Lockdown

Just a quick test of the Sennheiser Ambeo binaural headset recorded onto the IK multimedia iRig recorder app on my iPad. Still getting to grips and realised I could have set the gain a little higher and probably got a less noisy recording, but the stereo image sounds good IMO.

Sennheiser Ambeo Smart Headset test - Between the Robins

I've just rigged a starling box interior with a small omni mic and recorded this. The box creates some very strange resonances. Unfortunately, the very loud parts are distorted even despite recording in 32 bit!
