The invention of the tape machine changed the landscape of music making forever. From the sound of air raid sirens to the church bells of Coventry, Delia Derbyshire exploited the new capabilities of audio manipulation to recycle and recontextualise the sound of everyday life, in doing so unpacking her most salient memories, and instilling her works with a sense of childlike wonder.

In an age removed from analogue music making, Sound House aims to reclaim the tape machine as a token of a time of intense auditory development, using this premier radiophonic instrument as the material with which to interrogate the dual malleability of both medium and memory.

Sound House - Stereo Reduction

A group of northern lapwings (vanellus vanellus) performing an aerial display right in front of my microphones on a wetland site in mid-Sweden. They dive and loop in the air screeching with their iconic "peewit" song. At moments, you can hear their buzzing wingbeats. Towards the end, an individual lands near the microphones and begins alarming, possibly directed at the microphones (though they were very small and discreetly placed), a nearby predator, or another intruding bird.

In this episode we pass the podcast over to George Vlad and Daan Hendricks who tell us all about their trip to a field recording workshop in Mmabolela Reserve, Limpopo, South Africa.  They discuss everything from the planning and preparations,  getting from their homes in Europe to this remote location, and the gear they used (and how it held up in the extreme weather conditions). They also reminisce on the impressions the trip has left on their lives.  All with fantastic examples of the sounds they recorded while there.

This field recording uses contact mics which are shaped and sized like a £2 coin. I put some over ripe pear onto the surface of the microphone and left it on the ground in the garden for 2 hours. This is a fragment from that recording where you can hear about 50 ants swarming over, under and around the piece of pear. You can hear footsteps, munching and I'm sure they are having a good old natter and a few arguments over the taste of it.

Avec ses dons d'imitateur, il nous chante les poules du voisinage, les grenouilles de l'étang d'en bas, les mouettes du champ d'à coté, ... toute sa vie à lui.

Starling song and mimicry
Every afternoon a starling (Sturnus vulgaris) comes, in these times of confinement, to tell us news of  the outside world. With its gift for mimicry, he sings of chickens in the neighbourhood, of frogs in the pond below, of  seagulls in the nearby fields... snipets of its everyday life.
