the thing that is being. is the thingness (the essence) different than being (the fact that it exists, is present?).Both a cat and a table have in common that they are bounded by a completed surface. This makes them an entity in 3d space and allows us to distinguish them as discrete units , making them countable. This unity is even prior to essences like "cat' or "table".

What is the most all encompasing genus : wu absence (non being) .the generative void from which the ever-changing realm of presence perpetually arises...quite specific and stratforwrd: for each of the tenthousand things, absence is simply the emptiness that preceeds and follows existence. the ulitmate genus is god. Yes. Being as Being, or absence as absence. absence as absence nullifies itself, and you are left with the all. A kind of a pure presence. This is a very interesting account, but not beyond criticism.

I am reading Hadots collected essays, where the spoken word is given priority over the written text. It is quite conceivable that not all conversations within a school were recorded in a dialogue.

eidos...aristotelian insofar as the form is in the thing. Yes. Form is the containment of matter, matter exists only as formed (completed). the ousia is a formed matter unit. to be wild...it is an occurance of tzu-jan (occurnce appearing of itself, self-so). If  wanted to more responsibly stay within the western tradition I could use Heidegger's "phenomenon". While comparison and contrast is useful in discerning the meaning of terms, it is not so good for stating conclusive results.

Seneca can say that things don't really exist because he thinks the Heraclitan ontolgy is true. All things are in flux. But he still identifies man and cows. Where does he get these genuses? Not from Heraclitus. Are the genus in flux as well? ousia is the basis of stability,persistance. If the percieved world does not give us ousias, plalos transcendent world is the the basis of ousias, and Heraclitus has no ousias, what is Seneca's account of nature . A stoic is to conform to nature. It is normative, even legislative. If nature is the flux, there is no nature to conform to. One has protagorus's "man the measure". How is the logos the same and different from Plato's forms, and Aristotle's substance...for stoic, the cosmic whole is the logos...

This is a very good lecture. I need to reflect more.

Ep. 16: Is BLR Reactionary?

: In this ninth episode of the Wisdom for Life radio show, hosts Dan Hayes and Greg Sadler examine a common image of concentric circles used to understand relationships with other people towards whom we might have affection, care, or moral obligations.  The smallest circle is that of close friends and family, while the largest extends to all humanity, and potentially beyond.

They discuss how differing philosophical and wisdom traditions, including Stoicism, Buddhism, and Utilitarianism have used this image, and developed practices designed to help us develop attitudes of justice and benevolence towards other beyond the circles we most typically focus upon.

They also examine a common issue that arises when considering circles of community - to what extent should a person focus on their nation or political community as the most important?  Should their focus instead be on all people, or on people closer to them?

They end the show by introducing a very helpful philosophical practice derived from several schools of Buddhism, Metta or "loving-kindness" meditation, which employs the conception of circles.

Wisdom for Life: Circles of Care and Concern

In this tenth episode of the Wisdom for Life radio show, hosts Dan Hayes and Greg Sadler examine a common matter in everyday life - lying. What is a lie, and what counts as "lying"?  Can lying ever be something good, right, required, or even just all right?

They discuss different ways we can classify and understand lies, including the distinction between white, black, and blue lies.  Moral theories help us to understand and evaluate the rightness or wrongness of lies - and why they are right or wrong, good or bad - and they examine lying through the rigorous deontological lens of Immanuel Kant, and the more forgiving utilitarian lens of Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill.

They also examine a common issue that frequently arises.  What about people who embellish stories?  Are they lying?  And is that embellishment morally bad, or is it something that contributes to enjoyable communication

They end the show by introducing a very helpful philosophical practice designed to help people develop an understanding of what kinds of lies or deception they engage in, and why they do it, so they can make better choices about these matters

Wisdom for Life:  Is Lying Ever Good?  2020-05-23

In this thirteenth episode of the Wisdom for Life radio show, hosts Dan Hayes and Greg Sadler discuss the Social Contract, a classic philosophical concept that plays a key role in American politics and everyday ethics, and which also bears on recent nationwide protests over police misconduct and aggression.

They discuss first what the social contract is and whether or not it has been broken for many Americans, referencing the recent short talk given by Kimberly Jones.  They also look at what ideas from classical social contract theory - found in Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and John Rawls can be useful for understanding our present situation

They also discuss who has been systematically excluded from the social contract, examine a few of the key points that Charles Mills discusses in The Racial Contract, and look at the features Nicholas A Christakis outlines for a better social contract.

They end the show by discussing a practice that listeners could engage in - trying to imagine a new social contract that would be equitable and just for all.

Wisdom for Life: The Social Contract Today

This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient Stoic philosopher Seneca's Letters, this one looking at Letter 58

It discusses several important issues in metaphysics, spurred by considering 6 different types of things Plato is said to have considered to be beings or to have being.  Seneca begins with some considerations about the Latin and Greek languages, about about the terms essentia, ousia, to on, and quod est, and then discusses what genera and species are, and how they are arranged in relation to each other.  He then discusses the 6 types of being Plato is said to have distinguished, and why individual material things are not really beings - not only from a Platonic, but also a Stoic perspective.

Seneca, Letter 58 - Types Of Being - Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient Stoic philosopher Seneca's Letters, this one looking at Letter 33

It focuses specifically on his response to Lucilius, who is asking him for maxims, or what we would nowadays call quotes or sound bites - short and catchy passages from Stoic texts that could be memorized as summaries of the doctrine.  Seneca views Stoicism as a systematic philosophy, unable to be summed up in maxims, and provides several reasons why - although maxims are suitable for children, and complete beginners - one needs to go beyond mere maxims.
