I recently bought this tape for $0.10 and it had test tones for calibrating two portable Marantz tape recorders. I decided to make them the focus of this improvisation. Here's what I used:

Here is my piece for violin and alto saxophone. The piece is just a conversation between the two instruments.

This piece was written for the Montreal Contemporary Music Lab which I was a part of in June 2014. It was a fantastic week of workshops and sessions with some pretty amazing musicians from all over. I'd like to thank the lab and especially Lisa Romain (violin) and Louis-Philippe Bonin (saxophone) for putting in so much hard work throughout the piece to make this a success.

James Tenney - Saxony

Greg Bruce is a woodwind player, composer, and educator from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. As a veteran of the indie, classical, jazz, and experimental music scenes of his hometown, he can be heard playing with a wide variety of groups and on numerous recordings. In addition to having thoroughly toured Eastern Canada, he has performed in the US and Europe.

His main creative output for the past several years has been composing for and leading the award-winning “world-beat-party-jazz” group, Ouroboros. In 2017, Greg was commissioned by the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Orchestra to write Spear and Sand, which was premiered in April 2018.

Currently, Greg lives in Ontario where he is pursuing his doctoral studies at the University of Toronto. As part of his research, Greg is composing for a new amplified-saxophone-feedback system that he invented, as well as studying jazz and classical approaches to electroacoustic saxophone.
