In situ

This time, I return to the realm of fantasy, where my characters, upon arriving in the North, found themselves in the dwarven mines. There, they are to meet with the Dwarf King's son, who will task them with aiding in uncovering the mystery surrounding his father's death, slain in a goblin ambush. However, before this occurs, they take part in a funeral ceremony.

To craft this piece, I utilized only the free VSTi's by ProjectSAM @projectsam: Free Orchestra 1 and 2. I've begun working on it 2 months ago... It's one of my over 30 projects in development ;)

Folks, please forgive my excitement over this one; for this is my first collaboration with the exceptionally talented multi-instrumentalist and instrument inventor... Carlos Vivanco (https://soundcloud.com/carlosvivanco-1, https://carlosvivanco1.bandcamp.com/). There are so many cool things about this project, I don’t even know where to begin. So let’s just start at the very beginning.

Carlos and I crossed paths in the chatroom of Eddie Shook’s bi-weekly radio show ‘Anything Goes’ about two years ago. Not having a massive amount of music theory knowledge, I knew Carlos was crafting music on a whole different level... so I just admired his works from a safe distance. Then one night in chat, something strange happened (I blame the third beer. I’m pretty sure the second one had nothing to do with it). In a moment of unabashed exuberance, I uttered the following words... “Carlos, one of these days I’m going to get up the courage to ask you to collaborate with me. And you could even challenge me with a really unusual time signature... like 10/8.” You’re currently enjoying the results of where that conversation led. :D

Before this song, I knew the less common time signatures had creative ways they could be counted out (I’ve used 12123 in my two 5/4s, for example); but 10/8 was a complete unknown. Carlos taught me that Tizita is the Hindi name for the scale we used (for all you advanced listeners out there), and he suggested I think about it from the context of the words and syllables ‘Gamala Gamala Taaki Taaki’ (Hindi for ‘Flowerpot so that’; and here it is, written out in its original and very beautiful language… गमला गमला ताकि ताकि). And it worked brilliantly. So well in fact, that I now hear those words when I play the song... so we adopted the phrase for the song’s name.

So there you have it... one of the most challenging pieces I’ve worked on, to date. And best of all, it fanned that burning desire to learn even more. 

Carlos, thank you so much for having the willingness and patience to create this with me. And we’re both excited to create more music together, so we might as well thank that third beer while we’re at it (now if only I had thought to save the bottle as a collector’s item, haha). We hope you enjoy ‘Gamala Gamala Taaki Taaki’. :D

MESSAGE TO MY SC FRIENDS: I regret to admit, the Soundcloud bugs are such a frequent occurrence now, it’s effecting my mood and my creative energy; and I need to have the wisdom to stop using it. But there are a lot of you out there still putting forth the effort (and I greatly admire you for having the patience), so I also need to stop openly complaining about it.

Honestly, one of the main reasons I chose SC was the ability to connect with you, and support and celebrate your new songs as well. I can’t do that effectively anymore. And speaking from the heart (with a definite bias coming from my autistic wiring)… it feels insincere and wrong to me, to keep uploading my music here, if I can’t support your music as well. 

So long story short, as much as this sucks, I decided to cancel my subscription (which ends on June 29th). The way the world is going, my time (and money) need to go toward things that promote happiness. Clearly… buggy software does not. o.o

If SC miraculously gets these bugs sorted out by then, I will happily reactivate my subscription. If they don’t, the solo works will need to be deleted a few days before June 29th, to ensure there is room for all the collabs (I don’t want my collab partners to suffer any losses, because of my choice). 

Before that happens, I urge you to grab free downloads of anything you want. Please help yourselves to copy/pastes of any liner notes you enjoyed as well. And I will also mention, all my current and future works will still be found on Bandcamp (original liner notes included in each song description). Those are truly the best versions of the songs anyway (finalized for the albums), and they will remain free to download there as well.
