GMETA014- Reformulated

As a follow up to Anorak’s Formula EP, originally released in November 2023, we bring you seven outstanding remixes, or "reformulations", each very much flipping the original into something breathtakingly unique: Reformulated.

We are drip-feeding Reformulated one track per week for the next few weeks.

This release has been a long time in the making but is undeniably overshadowed by the untimely passing of Rich DFZD. John Anorak explains...

“This release is very special to me. It started with me requesting a remix from a good friend of mine Rich [DFZD]. We hadn't spoken for a few years and it was great to be back in touch. Rich was someone who took me under his wing when I first started producing in 2002/3 and taught me loads about sound design. His stuff was so inspirational back then, blowing everything else out of the water.

I was over the moon when he agreed to do the remix. He sent me a very rough version of the track a few weeks later- he had been up all night and smashed it in a 14-hour production spree! What he sent was pure fire and inspired me to put together a whole remix EP.

Unfortunately, before all the other remixes were in, Rich passed away [cancer]. I was absolutely gutted, not only had I lost a good friend I had recently reconnected with, but the remix would never see the light of day.

Months went by and all the other remixes came in [I still can't believe Dolphin’s effort- it is an absolute face melter!] but it still felt incomplete, Then by chance one of Rich's mates had gained access to his computer and uploaded a folder which included the tracks he had last been working on. I eagerly, yet with a sense of deep loss, listened to everything in the folder and to my delight, it contained a brand new version of the remix which I managed to obtain! The Remix EP was complete.”

At Grey Meta, artists get paid. As such, all monies due to Rich DFZD will go to his children.

Anorak - H2SO5 (DFZD Reformulation)

UK hardcore OG, Dolphin has concocted a BANGER of a remix for Reformulated. This rave-ridden jungle-infused hardcore flip of Anorak's original track is simply incredible, or to quote John Anorak "an absolute face melter"!

When not pummelling kickdrums and destroying dancefloors, Greg cohosts the superb Oblivion Underground Podcast with Joe ET, often dispensing invaluable music production advice to the scene's new blood.

We are super excited about him playing at Balter Festival this summer in a B2B2B hardcore techno extravaganza with Hellfish and The DJ Producer.

Anorak - ß-met-2ME (Dolphin Reformulation)

Jacob is back with a disgustingly grotty half-time drum and bass slammer. His Anorak Reformulation overflows with reece basslines and his signature breakbeat manipulations. Made, according to Jacob, with the goal of instilling an overwhelming sensation of dread, tension and unease, this remix's rubber brick like density fills the audio spectrum, yet contradictorly feels airy, spacious and satisfyingly minimal. Maximal yet minimal undeniably speaks to our modus operandi at Grey Meta. There is a reason for, and a beauty in, working with Jacob for the past 15 years, and this track explains it better than words could. Revel in it. We are. 

Anorak - ß-met-3ME (Jacob Reformulation)

Varispeed boss man Scheme Boy has gone, “shred baby shred”, on his Anorak reformulation. Here, in what might be his magnum opus, he has sliced and diced the original into a 200BPM breakcore edit fest which serenely balances dissected breaks and acid with a maximally evocative cinematic score. We know almost all breakcore is and should be an 'edit-fest' but when Scheme Boy turns in his take on the genre, it always flows, uniquely to him, as if being played on a harp by Satan’s fawn. There's truly only one person that sounds like Ash and that is Ash.  

WARNING Stroke like symptoms might be experienced trying to keep up with this one. Don't try and keep up, just let it wash over you. Scream if you smell toast!

Scheme Boy needs no introduction, he is most of your favourite DJs favourite DJ, a music producer who actually understands music, and an event promoter extraordinaire. Varispeed Socialz in Bristol not only showcases the absolute best and upcoming in the world of breakcore, hardcore techno, DnB, techno, IDM,  drum and bass and everything in between, it has built a loyal, completely unique cult and community. It acts as a gateway rave, where the next generations get their first taste of true Big F*ck Off Rave music. The monthly nights are much more than just a normal underground rave; they are likely the only truly regular monthly underground party left in the UK and truly stand as a totem to his musical tenacity. 

Scheme Lord is back and hasn’t missed a chop.

On the release, old Scheme Man said “Back in 2016, I remixed Guillotine by Anorak. Back then, I knew I couldn’t out-breakcore John, so I took a different approach—transforming his track into a weird, half-time orchestral bass hybrid. Fast-forward to 2025, and John asked me to remix him again. This time, I noticed all the tracks getting ‘reformulated’ were sitting in the 175 BPM range, so I figured it was time to fully embrace the breakcore. I pushed the tempo up to 200 BPM and went all-in with the acid and break edits.

To tie it back to my Guillotine remix, I wanted to set it against a haunting orchestral soundscape. Once I knew this release would also feature a remix from our dearly missed friend, Rich DFZD, the emotional harmony poured out naturally. My remix of H30+ is a fusion of grief and energy—a tribute to Rich and a full-throttle breakcore shredfest."
