After 4 years of rave parties in Lyon, the Spiral Dance crew just gave birth to the Sous Traitance label.

Throughout its first compilation – a strong selection of up-and-coming producers –, the collective gathered 30 minutes of fiery and experimental breakbeat, considerably influenced by the ‘90s wild energy.

Yet, the 6-track Various goes beyond showcasing an obvious inheritance from the UK early-rave era, perfectly embodied by Antoine 80 and Shcuro contributions. The 12” vinyl also blends genres from the past 3 decades - in the true spirit of the current French underground djing style -, as Jonnnah and Penelope’s Fiance both from the contemporary drum n bass scene codes, while DJ 8.6 drops a mid-2010s industrial downtempo burner, and Yolek even sounds to be inspired by the nasty, raw atmospheres of 2000s hip-hop.

Los Angeles – This November, American cult hero DEV/NULL debuts on Trickfinger & Aura T-09’s Evar Records with MICROJUNGLIZM , an 7-track album that explores the power and beauty of darkcore, jungle tekno and breakbeat rave. Chopped drums, hairpin turns and alluringly emotional pads open up a time portal between the past and the future, decorated with haunting samples and musical Easter eggs that show off Boston-based Dev/Null’s deep history as a rave historian and scholar.
MICROJUNGLIZM ’s fantasy suite was written over the last year, arranged and sequenced entirely without a computer. Dev/Null f ell in love with Teenage Engineering’s PO-33 Pocket Operator – a portable, pocket-sized sequencer that he started using during his DJ sets to create special versions on the fly. The l imitations of making entire tracks inside the PO-33 immediately suggested the sampling techniques and stylistic hallmarks of early jungle, already one of Pete’s longtime obsessions.
“The PO-33 has some of the same low-fi sonic charm as retro gear used back i n the day,” Pete explains. “8-bitsamples, 11khz mono sound, kind of like an Amiga computer. It’s been really fun and exciting to have my own tracks to throw into sets – even if they’re raw, unfinished 3-minute things which get played once and never again. A
few of these tunes were done f or my sets at parties thrown by Aura T-09 i n L.A., so I ’m happy they’re coming out on her label.”
While these tracks may seem maximal, they are minimal to Pete’s ear – a departure from the intricately sliced and information-dense breakcore for which he’s known. The album emotionally bottles the essence of a bygone era with an individual palette of influences, from UK grime anthems to Italian horror soundtracks. Pete is not merely
trying to tap into the cultural zeitgeist for all things jungle and breakbeat rave – he’s already been here, stoking the fires of this scene since the early 2000s with his tastemaker blog (Blog to the Old Skool), his cult vinyl reissue label 8205 Recordings, and his deep dive radio shows: Demon Poetry on NTS and BTTO (with new-era jungle
torchbearer Tim Reaper) on Jungletrain.net. MICROJUNGLIZM itself follows on from the momentum created by Pocket Selector, Dev/Null’s 2020 outing with the PO-33 on the Modern Urban Jazz label, run by veteran UK drum ‘ n’ bass producer Justice. In a galaxy far, far away (known to the initiated as "Australia") a new record label has emerged 🌌 @saucetraxx have put together a stunning line-up for their first VA compilation, which is out on the 4th of September and features familiar faces like DJ @karawai, @djmellg and @3phasesupply.

We have the honour of premiering "Darth Fader", an absolutely stunning belter by @osckins, who started his own killer label, @shubzin, this year. This forceful track manages to be an amazing amalgamation of rattling Amen Breaks, fat Sub-Bass and Star Wars Samples, without just ticking off classic UK Hardcore or Jungle Techno tropes. Ian McDonnell is an Irish producer living in Wicklow near Dublin. Alongside his solo releases as Eomac he's also one half of the duos Lakker, noeverything and Lena Andersson.

'Cracks' represents a change of scenery and a change of practice from his previous two albums which were both conceptualised from the outset and recorded while living in Berlin. In contrast 'Cracks' was made in a beautiful rural part of Ireland without any outside pressure. These circumstances allowed Ian to wipe the slate clean and make an album guided by his mood on any particular day, connecting into the subtle power of his new environment and reflecting it, rather than working to please the suffocating demands of clublife. The title 'Cracks' comes from the idea that, to quote Leonard Cohen, a crack is "how the light gets in", but also of course it's a title that bears witness to the cracks fomenting in the world right now.

The music comes across with depth and passion, sounding deep and mossy with Eomac's penchant for punchy, shuffling drums underpinning the emotive tracks. From the off, the furious 'Mandate For Murder' flips and repeats Akala's protest about systemic racism, rushing deep into the panicked sirens of 'Portuguese Man O' War'. The album settles into a sense of mystery, wildness and dark otherworldliness with the foggy drone and timber kick of 'Ancient Self' reflecting the awe and spiritual connections to his new environment, much like the gorgeous strings and aqueous bleeps of 'Seashells' or the pitch-shifted shoegaze of 'Prophetess'. At other points it responds to the human condition, for instance the cathartic 'Falling Through the Cracks' where a broken scream is pitted against clattering drums. At other moments it simply reaches out; 'Reasons to Live's' whispered mantra of "I know you are loved by somebody" is gently insistent.

It ends with a reference to a place he's left behind, seen through the lens of nature. 'All the Rabbits in the Tiergarten' could be a missing track from Aphex's Ambient Works, albeit with cut-up scissoring drums. The album is a fruitful move, inwards and forwards.
