A wandering poet and ascetic Zen priest, Santōka was a disciple of Ogiwara Seisensui, one of the first poets to discard the traditional use of the 5-7-5 structure in haiku.

Santōka’s poetry emphasizes the necessity of sabi (solitude) in order to achieve spiritual enlightenment and serenity.

In dancing can open the skies
Or come to the aid of the Party we crave
In the absence of others more wise

Where players will play and dancers will dance
Then people will follow behind

Wasn’t it always the way
These are the people who know what we feel
Before we believe what we say

We may not believe that the singers
Have anything more than a rhyme
For lovers and fools its only game
For filling a gap in the time

We may not believe  even rock and roll
Has anything much true say
Nothing much more than the beat of a drum
Sing and repeat, fade away

Where singers will sing and rockers will roll
