One year and a half after Jaroska’s ’Red Room Offering’ release, Lyon-based AR/FM label is back with the fourth imprint of its catalog, due for June 2021.
Following the label’s aim of exploring a widened techno spectrum while working with and promoting unsung talented friends, AR/FM is about to provide another beautiful piece of music, this time from ephemeral trio Stakhanov.

This eponymous LP offers 55 minutes of dense, fluctuant electronic experimentations, taking inspirations in the relentless Soviet worker myth. Its frantic and industrial overall atmosphere, set by sharp yet harsh paces, is eventually pulled to pieces by murky and hallucinated ambient acts, depicting a way darker story than the one told by the USSR propaganda.  
Thus, one rhetorical question remains: Could this unhealthy man-a-machine glorification come to any different end than madness?

Based upon Hugo Charpentier’s drawings, that can be found both on inner and outer sleeves, the 7-track album definitely takes advantage of its visual dimension, resulting in an elegant double-12” black-&-white gatefold layout. 

Releasing Stakhanov was also for AR/FM a way to pay tribute to the golden era of Lyon alternative electronic scene around 2013-2016, of which the project-members were three of the many faces. 
Through their different collectives and labels (CLFT Militia, SILO, Palma…) amongst others, all the instigators of this creative craze considerably contributed to the constitution of a new generation of Lyon-scene protagonists, AR/FM being one of them.

since my childhood beuys has been present, as inspiration, as confrontation, as ancestor of my parent's art endevour as their teacher, as a thinker, a painter, a craftsman. in a couple of days it would have been his 100 birthday. as problematic his televisible heroism and his political aspirations were, his work is of soft and delicate beauty, touching children's hearts as well as those grown up. 
i remember sticking reed branches into the earth of a path near a lake somewhere as my first concious thought of an artistic practice, remember my first visit to berlin and the typical small constructions sites with its laydown of materials, remember the long hours i spent in palazzo regale in the k20 in düsseldorf discovering a secret mirror-passage behind a vitrine - a lot of presence for a dead man. a hiatus of thought to whish the felt love to his works transmits back into what he knew. happy birthday beuys!

the image is from a 1982 whiskey commercial beuys did in japan in order to promote his 7000eichen work, the sound is from the beuys piece jajajaja - nenenene from 1968, upright bass and piano by me. (apparently beuys was inspired by the lamentations at a funeral he visited, but it is also a very niederrhein sound, a very distinct regional narrative style. it is an hour long, but the variations never gets boring i think). anyway have a nice workers day and don't burn my house down please.

Nina is a Hamburg based dj, label owner and promoter behind the famous Hamburg Golden Pudel Club event series Nina trifft… Nina is one of the main people behind the V I S label, which she co-runs with Good News. Within the large number of mixtapes for labels such as Blackest Ever Black offshoot Krokodilo Tapes or JSMЁ Records, Nina explores the thin boundaries between industrial, drone, acoustic experimentation and proto-techno, with frequent excursions to the fields of synthwave and ambient sounds. Her live sets also burst with similar dynamics and turn venues into immersive listening chambers filled with floating sounds. Her excellent set during the 2015 edition of Unsound Krakow was described by Philip Sherburne as “steel-wool ambient”, where the punkish noise of Wolf Eyes was overlaid with Helm’s cutting-edge drone voyages. Similarly adventurous is her cassette label V I S, which has released music varying from rare Greek ethno (Greek Ethno Music Location Recordings compilation) to Basic House’s atmospheric post-industrial.

Secret Thirteen Mix 256 is an ambientish trip focusing on the darker areas of the genre. It is a continuous string of monolithic hypnosis with layers delicately shifting, replacing each other with microdynamic twists and turns. The mix sounds very coherent despite the diversity of artists included, illustrating Nina’s capability to identify similar sensibilities across divergent styles, melding them together to form surprising, beautiful chimeras. The sonic surfaces have a strong sense of physicality, with each track a microworld coalescing with its surroundings. Starting from the airy pulsations of dark d’n’b masters Flxk1 & DB1, it then shifts towards a more claustrophobic mode with Deep FridgePita (where they place mics in a fridge to capture its sounds). Jonny Nash and Lindsay Todd’s collab brings some organic freshness, while Francois Bayle’s transparent transmissions remind us of the timeless Recollection GRM explorations. Due to its microscopic patterns, subtly changing surface tones and immersive/hypnotic nature, Infinite Waves by Kazuo Nakamura could serve as a good visual companion for Nina’s mix.

I was very nervous the first time I met Christoph, having based my impression of him from moody press photographs while looking up so highly to his work. It must have gone okay, as we’ve kept in touch and worked on three releases since – two of which focus on the wealth of music he made in the ‘90s. He has remained highly active and a personal highlight for the label this year was releasing Split. I’d also recommend checking out his collaborative project, SUDS, with Wilted Woman.

The air above a cityscape is never still. At sundown, the seeming emptiness envelops one in melancholy; as the night goes on, all the neon lights, looming structures and dancing smoke silhouettes come along to keep the company. The urban soundtrack put together by Alethe is a reflection of both the cold and the welcoming, the abrasive and the melodic, all of which makes apparent the dualistic allure of the city. The Russian artist's music has been released on tape labels such as Audio. Visuals. Atmosphere., Holy Geometry and Strange Rules. Alethe's mix for Amulet of Tears contains many of his recently favoured works and inspirations.
