TUNTU is a British musician and songwriter. known for his intricate storytelling through music, TUNTU brings a unique and divers sound to the UK scene. Born in Lilongwe, Malawi and later immigrating to the UK, TUNTU witnessed firsthand the struggles of marginalized communities and the oppressive systems. These experiences opened his eyes to the power of writing as a means of expressing his beliefs and exploring the deeper mysteries of life.

As a teenager, TUNTU discovered the dynamic and innovative world of Hip-Hop, and was immediately struck by its potential for creative expression, Drawing on influences from a range of genres including Grime, Soul, and Reggae, he began to develop a unique style that blended hard-hitting beats with a deep sense of spirituality. Fusing punk rock vocals with Hip-Hop, TUNTU's sound is characterized by raw, unapologetic lyrics and an uncontrolled passion for justice. His music is a call to action, urging listeners to challenge the status quo.

He began his career professionally in his early 20’s performing under the stage name TUNTU, quickly garnering local attention and later launching an independent record label “Unapologetic Music” (UM) in 2020, aimed to establishing Innovative entertainment. Since then TUNTU has continued to bring out thought provoking music and visuals that astonish his supporters. Diving deep in topics such as political propaganda, spirituality, taboo's and mental health throughout his generation, TUNTU is not afraid to shear his perspective.

I used to go by the name Yungun.  Back in what some call the “golden age” of UK Hip-Hop I dropped a couple of albums -  "The Essance" (2004) and "Grown Man Business" (2006, a joint effort with my long-time collaborator DJ Mr Thing). I had a lot of fun, worked with some of the best hip-hop artists in the UK and got the nod of approval from people like Nas and Mark Ronson.  I even ended up doing a track with Guru from Gang Starr (R.I.P.).  Then I took a bit of time off from music to qualify as a lawyer (I specialise in media and entertainment industry law).

Now I’m back under the name “Essa”. My latest album 'Misadventures of a Middle Man' was released in May 2014 on First Word Records. I’m currently working on new material  and am looking for collaborators ...
