Hardly anybody has brought electronic music from Berlin to the farthest flung corners of the world with more passion and enthusiasm than these two heavyweights.

Modeselektor – Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary – are bass music heroes. Together with a veritable army of collaborators, guest artists and with their two labels Monkeytown and 50 Weapons, they have built a broad network. They assimilate and process the tiniest vibrations in the global bass continuum and at the same time, their wobbly salvos and their oblique sense of humour are unmistakable. They became known to a select audience through their records on BPitch Control with which they catapulted themselves out of the Berlin 4/4 cosmos, whilst simultaneously reflecting the raw and full-on spirit of the 1990s Berlin club scene.

Apparat (real name: Sascha Ring) could hardly be more opposite. He fuses tricky electronics with heartfelt and auspicious pop. Together with T.Raumschmiere, he founded Shitkatapult. From early on, Apparat realised that the LP was his preferred form of expression. With each album, he reinvented himself on a personal, stylistic and social level: gradually bringing ever more strata of his emotional persona to light, exploring previously unknown musical styles and involving guest musicians in the process.

In 2002, Sascha, Gernot and Sebastian met for the first time. At that point in time, Apparat and Modeselektor were well established in the Berlin music scene. Sascha had already released his debut album and Gernot and Sebastian, a series of 12”s. Their shared studio time wore them down to such an extent, that they were forced to shelve the project almost immediately. But the foundations were laid and the three of them were able to present the fruits of their labour: the “Auf Kosten der Gesundheit” EP. Eleven years later, one still can have a sense of the sparks that must have flown in the studio: complex beats wrestling with furious bass and reduced rap elements.

Six years went by before they got together again. In the mean time both acts had established sensationally successful careers. In 2005, Modeselektor’s debut album “Hello, Mom!” gained them international recognition at light speed. Pitchfork rejoiced and Thom Yorke constantly mentioned them. Their second album featured vocals from Otto von Schirach, Maximo Park and... Thom York. Modeselektor stormed the festival stages and were honoured by Beatport and Resident Advisor.

Apparat had not just one but two breakthrough albums: in 2006 and together with Ellen Allien, he founded the “Orchestra of Bubbles”, with which the two of them explored the language of song. In 2007 he released “Walls”, his first time working with a band. He developed a live show that fused together acoustic and electronic, and club and pop music. Just as with Modeselektor, Apparat is the epitome of the Berlin sound, but nonetheless lifts the sounds of the city to another level. Significantly, both acts toured with Radiohead.

In 2008, Gernot, Sebastian and Sascha came together once again. Their eponymous debut album was released on April 20, 2009. Busdriver, the Californian rapper, the German reggae heroes Seeed and the dup poet Paul St. Hilaire joined them on a several songs. Perhaps the secret of Modeselektor’s and Apparat’s collaboration lies in the fact that they never even tried to get close to one another. Modeselektor’s thundering bass rumbles in the cellar, Apparat’s sensitive and subtle melodies float high in the eaves. The fact that what one assumes to be incompatible actually communicates, is what makes Moderat so unique. Moderat is not just a studio project: with a set of visuals created for these concerts by Pfadfinderei, they toured all five continents.

With Monkeytown and 50 Weapons, Modeselektor created a highly potent label empire, which unites the music scene’s old heroes with crazy bass kids. The two of them have curated a whole stage at the Melt! Festival a number of times and have released their third album. Apparat travelled the world with the freshly re-formed Apparat Band. He relinquished his position as auteur for the first time by becoming part of a theatre performance and in the album that resulted, released the raw and mostly unedited sessions.

Now, twelve years after their first meeting, Modeselektor and Apparat have come together once again: more mature, but not worldly-wise, wiser but not unquestioning, more experienced but without having sacrificed any of their pioneer spirit. 

They release the 1st single "Bad Kingdom" today 1st July 2013 and drop longplayer " II "  in August 2013 through Monkeytown Records ... You can catch Moderat Live in the UK at Eastern Electriks Knebworth House on August 2nd 2013...

This song was written as my little homage to Peter Gabriel and his use of African Rhythms in his music. After setting up the drum groove I just couldn't stop playing these two main riffs on my fretless bass over top of it and hence, the tune was done, all that was added was the short break down section in the middle. This song is very short and to the point.

Amon Tobin marches to no one’s beat but his own. In a career spanning over ten years he has been connected to but never belonged to a host of scenes and styles. He has consistently made the music he feels he needs to make, not what other people think he ought to make, always exhibiting a level of attention to sonic detail which makes his music more intensely textured, beautiful and brutal than almost anyone’s out there. 

Make no mistake – 'Stunt Rhythms' is about beats and bass. The model for the album comes from “Fools Rhythm” (included here), one of the standout tracks from Ninja’s 20th anniversary 'XX' boxset, an infectious mixture of playground melody, sharp beat and thunderous bass. 

Although Amon’s love of the lower reaches of low end will undoubtedly cause people to reach for lazy comparisons with dubstep, 'Stunt Rhythms' is in fact more accurately viewed as his love letter to hip hop – less the rampant consumerism of, say, G-Unit’s “Stunt 101” than the early culture of innovation and freshness, of showing off simply that you’re better at what you do than anyone else. So while tracks like “Snap” could be said to literally break down classic hip hop to its constituent components and put them back together in completely new shapes, the more uptempo tracks like “Razorback” come on like a whole new soundtrack for an as-yet-uninvented future pop-locking. If you imagine Mantronix as a Kenworth K100 truck, Two Fingers is what happens when the truck turns into Optimus Prime. 

Uncompromising, muscular and powerful, the music of Two Fingers is also full of subtle touches, humour and a supple sense of rhythm. Which, when you think about it, is just showing off.

DJ Food aka Strictly Kev – one of Ninja Tune’s true veterans and powerhouses – returns with the next installment from his forthcoming, long-awaited album, “Stolen Moments.” And while the personnel of “DJ Food” has changed over the years, as has the musical vision, the name is always a guarantee of the utmost quality.

“Sentinel (Shadow Guard)” is the first ever studio collaboration between Kev and longtime DJ partner and Solid Steel producer DK. A track of contrasts - harp, acoustic guitar and ringing electronics versus filthy bass, heavy drums and rattling percussion. All held together by Ninja labelmate King Cannibal working the mixing desk, the results are driving and sinuous, but subtle, too. “Extract from Stolen Moments too” is a further peep at the creepy piano theme which will be visited and revisited across Food’s forthcoming EPs and woven throughout the album that will follow. “Brother John” is a tribute to the great John Rydgren, now sadly deceased, a pastor from the Lutheran church who subtly blended the word of God with the music of the day back in the 60s and 70s via his radio shows. This is classic Food – a seamless blending of vocal samples and musical goodness. “GIANT is voiceless cover version of the closing track from the classic “Soul Mining” album by The The. Literally years in the making and still not finished, The The’s main man Matt Johnson has given it his blessing and will be providing a new take on the original vocal for the album next year. “Sentinel (Lunar Defence)” We end where we came in - kind of - a completely different take on the opening track transforms it into a brooding guitar-led theme that delves into dark afro-percussion without warning – beautiful and unsettling in equal measure.

We hate to be the bearers of bad tidings, but there are difficult decisions for Food lovers to make. The 12” single once again comes with an A2 poster cover of exclusive artwork by 2000AD artist Henry Flint with colours and design by Openmind aka Strictly Kev. On the other hand, the download comes with three bonus tracks, the “All Covered In Darkness” Mr P remiix suite. Ex-DJ Food veteran and sometime Cinematic Orchestra member PC (Patrick Carpenter aka Mr P) returns from a musical hiatus to deliver not one but three versions of “All Covered In Darkness.” A favourite from the last Food EP, it features the dulcet tones of Ken Nordine and harmonies from The Dragons. He twists it from 4/4 to 6/8 time and back again, making it his own across an epic 13 minutes.
