just found out tomppabeats flipped this one awhile back, but I'm still digging it!

its snowing....

Futureboogie open their 2017 account with a new release from Lizards, the Newcastle based duo otherwise known as Lee Forster and James Hadfield.  After appearances on labels like Leng Records, Join Our Club and Not An Animal Records, Lizards strut their stuff across two original tracks, whilst man of the moment Lord Of the Isles weighs in with a superb remix.

The percussion driven house of “Tzatziki” kicks of the release, wrapped in warm and inviting pads and piano riffs.  Shades of old school Chicago house meet sun-kissed Balearic vibes on this early morning riser, as the heavyweight bass sounds curl around the raw drum programming and illuminating keys sprinkle over the production.

On “Aloof”, the tempo is taken down somewhat, as a bass line wanders over a steady kick and otherworldly ambient sounds and hushed vocal clips lazily glide over the 4/4 arrangement.  As the track unfurls, more melodic and percussive elements come into play, blossoming into a something quite epic and unique.

With a slew of releases for quality imprints like Permanent Vacation, Firecracker, Mule Musiq and ESP Institute, Neil McDonald, AKA Lord Of The Isles, serves up a deliciously chugging version of “Aloof”.  Gurgling bass and marching handclaps are dowsed in dramatic synth sweeps and glacial tones, as the good Lord takes us on a monumental ride.

LA-based music company, Godmode, is known for taking way-left artists and bringing them slightly more to the center.  After breaking Shamir and Yaeji, the label is back with their latest signing, Channel Tres. Channel grew up in the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles, and his music is a clear representation of the surly attitude of West Coast rap reimagined with the stylings of Detroit house. Fans of Galcher Lustwerk would be wise to check out this project. Similar to the NYC legend, Channel’s voice is effortlessly deep, expertly processed, and a perfect compliment to his deep, sultry instrumentals.

“Top Down” oozes swagger. While a Paranoid London-esque acid bassline rips through ethereal pads, Channel croons, “bet you ain't never heard shit like this from the block before.” He’s not completely wrong. While he’s not the first to champion a sound like this, he certainly has few modern peers. Aside from how dope the song is, I really appreciate the emphasis he places on individuality as an artist. He says, “never let the scene choose you. Never met a man this cool.” For me, it’s essential for a musician to be original, to believe in the uniqueness of their music, and to not conform to the standards set by a saturated scene. Going forward, I hope Channel sticks to his words. It’s not everyday you hear a debut this polished and full of a variety of influences. I’ll be waiting to hear these tunes at my NYC after-hours, but until then, I’m about to cut the top off my Saturn and slow-ride through Brooklyn. Here’s your invite.

Delve Deeper welcome Edmonton based producer, musician and DJ Honeydripper to the label for his debut EP - Cookie Cutter. A guitarist by trade, he has spent well over a decade heavily involved in live music, taking inspiration and experience from a diverse background in jazz, funk, and roots music. However a love for dance music and underground culture sparked the way to a solo house music project in the spring of 2017.  

Title track Cookie Cutter combines live funk bass licks and deep vocal hooks with detuned analogue synth stabs and rolling sub bass to produce a peak-time Deep House groover full of energy and ready for the dancefloor.

Dusty Beats provides a huge kick drum and more rolling sub bass to create a deep and thumping track highlighted by haunting vocals and staccato bleeps which all come together to create an atmospheric yet thumping track.
