RP: How’s life in Australia? 
SF: Life in Australia’s been good, all things considered. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t low-key itching to get on a plane and go travelling, though. To where, I’m not exactly certain, but I have a few places in mind. I don’t really have any international tours planned out at the moment - it can be quite time-consuming and costly without a booking agent who can handle certain tasks such as obtaining the appropriate visas. 

RP: Any big plans you’re hiding?
SF: I’ve always got new material in the works at any given time, even if I’m taking a slight break from working on it. There’s a new EP I’ve just received the masters back for, which should be good to go by early next year. I might release a track from it or whip up a Bandcamp drop before the end of 2023 if time permits. I’m not in a rush though - releases that come out towards the back-end of the year usually tend to be forgotten amidst all the holiday hubbub and I wanna make sure the whole thing’s good to go before I release it. 

RP: You said the next EP might be the ‘angriest batch of tunes you’ve ever made’.
SF: ‘Angry’ might be an overstatement, but it’s definitely wrought with a tension of sorts. Claustrophobia or anxiety, you could say. The bulk of the EP was written between 2021-2022, specifically during the slow return to ‘familiarity’ within the social landscape and when masks were all but a guaranteed requirement to leave the house. There’s even one track on it that’s called ‘Casual Contact’ - I wrote it the first time I ever had to quarantine because I was a close contact of someone who had COVID at the time. If that doesn’t scream ‘period-specific,’ I don’t know what will. 

RP: When’s the ambient record dropping? 
SF: Remind me in a couple of years. 

RP: How many CDJ/mixer buttons have you broken? 
SF: I’ve had my fair share of having fader and EQ knobs fly off the mixer and valiantly trying to find them whilst blind drunk in a dimly-lit club. It’s probably happened too many times to count. Thankfully, I haven’t actually broken a CDJ function button - as far as I know anyway. 

RP: Name your first ‘holy fuck’ experiences with electronic music.
SF: I was about 10 years old when I first properly came across Aphex Twin. Back when I was six, I’d taped an episode of Rage where Hole happened to be guest-programming and the last clip that made it to that tape was ‘Come to Daddy,’ but back then, I rarely made it to the end because I probably got bored or had other obligations. I was spooked enough to look up Warp Records later that day. 
While it’s not technically ‘electronic music,’ the first time I really paid attention to Timbaland’s productions, around the same time, also re-wired my brain as a kid. That set the way for me to understand genres like Grime and Jungle more readily before I was even old enough to really hear any of it in a club context. 

Not long after, I came across Wiley’s earliest productions (like ‘Eskimo’ and ‘Ice Rink’) and Dizzee Rascal's “Boy in Da Corner” - both of those blew me away. Age notwithstanding, I was living very far from where a lot of that music was spreading at the time, so it was more of a solitary pursuit, which meant I could get lost in its details quite easily. There’s probably a few other moments I’ve missed, but those three are the foundational memories I have where my interest in electronic music was piqued enough to jump right in. 

RP: Anyone more underground or underrated that you’d like to namedrop?
SF: I’m a bit hesitant to say certain artists are more ‘underrated’ or ‘underground’ than others, but I do have to single out Big Ever, Davis Galvin, Jonny From Space, Noire, Sister Zo, Tammo Hesselink, Leonce and the All Centre label as constant mainstays on my USBs. The Hessle Audio guys will always have my heart, but I’ve also really enjoyed listening to any sets from OK Williams, Hipsters Don’t Dance, Jon K, Nick Boyd, Cormac and DJ Voices that pop up.

Strict Face @ Subvert

Droneghost is the main musical project of Jaume Muntsant, producer and dj from Barcelona. The project started in 2015 with the intention of creating a dark sound universe, inspired by David Lynch, Lovecraft, Spanish ghost stories and other mysteries through the combination of techno, ambient and drone elements. Since then he has released his music on several labels such as Space Textures, Circular Limited, Aarden Records or Systolic, as well as on his own Bandcamp. 

This live set was recorded live at the Midline night organized by ABSIS at LAUT in Barcelona last year. The live set is made up of the sounds, loops and remixed patterns of Droneghost's material, working with Ableton as the main element and accompanied by a drum machine.

Strict Face has undoubtedly been one of the most exciting names to emerge from the club music scene over the last decade. Championed by labels such as NLV, Local Action, Gobstopper and Different Circles, the Australian producer has built up an impressive back catalog of releases over the years that have pushed genre boundaries in every direction possible, as well as providing a relentless stream of heat for DJ's USB sticks worldwide.

On this new release, the no-frills ‘Sin Drum’ kicks things off with a relentless assault of syncopated drums, leading into the delirious headrush of ‘Instant Swelter’ which melts breakbeats and vocal slices into a sweat-serving portion of rave ritalin. ‘Poison Finish’ pushes the low end to ludicrous levels before we finish with the thick soundscapes of ‘Casual Contact’ - washing the frenzy of the release in waves of psychedelic notes.

Every release from Strict Face has brought something new to the table, and with the highly anticipated ‘Thirst For Nerve’ EP releasing with his very own collective SLG International, the accomplished producer conjures up four brain bending tracks guaranteed to cause maximum club carnage. DifferentSound invites Operator (Southsea)

The DifferentSound Podcast #288 welcomes Operator! Operator is the alias of UK Techno artist Rich Jones, who has been DJing since the late 90s and producing since the early 00ʼs. After signing multiple successful 12” E.Pʼs to Soma, 8 Sided Dice and appearing on Richie Hawtinʼs Minus, Rich moved away from the trendy big room sound of the time and created Operator in 2012, to let his creative hair down and experiment with a wider sonic palette. This led to well received vinyl E.Pʼs on Audio Assault and Singular initially, and more recently releases on Mindtrip, Symbolism and a 12” LP on Mord. Rich also runs Gnosis Records, which he reserves for his more quirky and weird creations, occasionally veering into house flavours. Being from the UK, where in the early 00ʼs house and techno were often happy bed fellows, this influence is clear in his heavily groovy, swung style. Although always keeping abreast of current trends, Rich mostly focuses on a timeless ‘keep it different, keep it groovyʼ approach, with a penchant for heavy drums, subtle details in the sequence and lots of analog texture.  Noticeable gigs for Rich have included Tresor, Fold, Corsica Studios and Forsage, but for various reasons in the interest of health Rich has hung up his headphones for the foreseeable future. Rich continues to work tirelessly in the studio, though, and has many forthcoming projects in the works, including an E.P on the venerable Ilian Tape, a second release on Ben Simʼs Symbolism and a 12” on Pleistocene Future along with various plans for Gnosis.

Your thoughts pause as your attention draws to this moment. You begin to wonder... 'where am I, what was I doing?'.

A sense of frustration passes as a wave of tranquillity washes over you. Riding this feeling, you begin to drift into a state of intense thought. Places, faces and emotions surround you, passing by at the speed of light. It's as if your entire existence was inhaled by the vacuum of your focus. There is now little but a presence of darkness, yet somehow you feel at peace.

Suddenly, your mind blossoms like a flower and a rush of energy passes through you. It pulsates your very being, at a rate that feels so right, so content. Messages sing themselves into your imagination painting pictures of beauty. You're surrounded by lifeforms that creep closer with playfulness. You descend deeper, in awe of all that is before you.

The thought arises, is this real? And suddenly, all of what you have just experienced begins to float just out of reach. A snapshot of this very instance is stored in your conscience forever. It is this moment that you will ponder for the rest of your waking life.

Groov Mekanik aims to cease these moments and store them as vibrational data that evoke wonder. Breathe deep, move fast and enjoy the ride.
