A new monthly series of mixtapes, in which we invite First Word friends & family to lace us with a selection of their soulful favourites, from across the board. For June's edition, we invite the Singapore-based, Darker Than Wax co-founder Dean Chew. On the mix Dean says:

'The mix moves through a tapestry of shades and moods - it is an extension of what I consider as ‘soul music’. As a selector, I have always been interested in the liminal, the in-between spaces, and how different genres of music can intersect with each other. It is at once intuitive and spatial, and that ongoing exploration never ceases to amaze. It has always been about the process, and getting closer to your inner soul - I hope this mix touches you in a personal way. Enjoy!'

Edinburgh-based DJ, vinyl connoisseur, and soulful house selector. With roots deep in the golden era of house, taking inspiration from UK Kiss FM legends like Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson, Steve Jackson, and Bobbi & Steve in the mid-90s. A lifelong vinyl collector with over 30 years of crate-digging under his belt, he is on a mission to keep the spirit of underground house and garage alive—digging deep to unearth forgotten and unreleased gems that deserve the spotlight.

Now based in Edinburgh, he continues to push the sound forward through his fast-growing IG @melly_melv_records and his weekly Friday night show on Manchester’s @discbreakradio. Expect deep, groove-driven sets that blend soul, disco, and house.
