I remember an interview she did where she said this was written (at least in part) to fans of hers that had died from AIDS (one in particular who seemed to have really touched her). There is even a recording somewhere that I heard of a phone call she had with him (I think he had went into a coma by that point and she spent the phone call talking to his partner). They chatted like old friends and this was in probably 1994-1996. It was never clear (at least to me) what the guy had done to win her direct attention (so if I’m not telling all of the story, I apologize to him). But nonetheless, the guys partner that spoke to her on the phone is still alive and posts around socials regularly.

[Oct 2024 edit:
While my story is true, I think that with most Stevie songs, the lyrics are pulled (or “pooled”) from different spaces and times of her life. So while she may have been inspired by the AIDS epidemic, that doesn’t necessarily mean that every line has something to do with the story]
