Their conversation explores how this project sought to address the conspicuous void in professional literature on the complex challenges women group leaders face and how such dilemmas can be understood & skillfully addressed. Intersectionality is also discussed as an organizing principle in the book’s illuminating investigation. RU371: KLARA NASZKOWSKA ON SABINA SPIELREIN & EARLY WOMEN PSYCHOANALYSTS

In this episode, Angelo talks with Dr. Carlos Canales about his transformative journey from Peru to becoming a pioneering voice in somatic group therapy. Dr. Canales shares how his experience of separation and cultural displacement in early life shaped his innovative integration of Somatic Experiencing with group psychotherapy. Their conversation explores what it means to be truly grounded, how our bodies hold both individual and collective trauma, and why attending to physiological responses deepens rather than diminishes group intensity. Dr. Canales offers powerful insights about cultural difference in groups and demonstrates how recognizing and regulating the body creates space for genuine connection—wisdom born from finding belonging between worlds. Throughout, he makes a compelling case for why attachment theory must evolve to address how our bodies carry culture, while sharing his vision for a future of group therapy that integrates generosity and play alongside rigorous clinical work.

30. Carlos Canales

Last month the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference - better known as COP30 - was held in the Amazonian city of Belem in northern Brazil. The conference was widely seen as a disappointment - with a binding agreement for a roadmap for phasing out fossil fuels being blocked by Saudi Arabia, the UAE and other oil producing states. 

In the today's episode economist and activist Sabrina Fernandes joins PTO to talk about her thoughts on COP30. We spoke about how the structure of the COP process could conceivably be reformed in order to stop recalcitrant states vetoing action on climate. And we also talked about whether multi-lateral climate negotiations are being rendered irrelevant by developments in the global economy and the rapid expansion of renewable energy. 

We went on to talk about Sabrina's recent article in 'The Breakdown', titled Lula's Dilemma. We talked about the contradictory approach of Lula and the Brazilian worker's party towards climate and the environment and what Sabrina sees as a failing politics of "class conciliation" that has disastrous environmental consequences.

The Best Films of 2025, with Amy Taubin and Bilge Ebiri

This episode – “Dark Gods of Modernity: Why We Still Need Monsters” – argues that our age is full of monsters, even if we pretend we’ve outgrown them—and that we actually need them. The episode starts with the old role of monsters: they used to patrol the edges of maps and myths, marking what was dangerous or sacred. Dragons, demons, trickster gods gave shape to fears and taboos; they were ways of saying, “There is something here we don’t understand, but it matters.”

Modernity claimed to banish them with science and rationalism, yet they’ve only changed costume. Today’s monsters show up as serial killers in prestige TV, pandemics and plagues, rogue AIs, shadowy elites, conspiracy cabals, zombies and apocalypses in endless variations. Even in a secular culture, we keep inventing figures that condense dread, guilt, and awe.

The episode’s core claim is that monsters are how a society metabolizes what it cannot face directly. Climate change, systemic racism, algorithmic exploitation, ecological collapse—these are slow, sprawling, and hard to narrate. So we displace them into sharper figures: evil billionaires, satanic rings, killer robots, viral hordes. Sometimes those stories illuminate real power dynamics; often they simplify and mislead. Either way, they signal where the pressure is.

We also carry personal “dark gods”: intrusive thoughts, addictions, forbidden desires, depressive spirals. Treating them only as malfunctions misses something. Like mythic monsters, they guard thresholds—unresolved grief, disowned anger, unlived capacities. The episode suggests that outright demonization backfires; what we refuse to acknowledge returns in cruder, more destructive form.

Rather than trying to erase monsters, we need better ones: images and narratives that help us see genuine dangers (like fossil capital, surveillance, supremacist ideologies) without collapsing into paranoia or purity crusades. Monsters, in this view, are tools: creative, symbolic containers for terror and shadow that can either trap us in fear or guide us toward more honest contact with what’s wrong—and what still might be transformed.
