On the back of a stunning EP for Defected’s sister label DFTD, emerging UK artist Cristoph takes it up a notch with his ‘Shelter’ EP, the double-thick 4-tracker prime and ready to smack the dancefloor right between the eyes. 
London, Bristol and Manchester may be famed for their iconic dance scenes, but the UK’s north-east continues to be a hotbed for unearthing exciting electronic music talent.  

One artist adding to the vibrant growing scene around the Tyneside, in Cristoph. Although active in his native Newcastle and beyond, with key gigs in iconic Geordie hotspots such as Digital and Loop, including a support slot alongside Waze & Odyssey that still gets spoken about till this day, it’s his slowly growing arsenal of heavy-hitting house cuts, that’s causing a torrent of support from the industry’s most respected artists. 

Just released on hyped sub-label of Defected DFTD (that recently issued cuts from Guti, among others) his ‘Guffaz’ EP has been causing a stir across dancefloor in Ibiza and beyond, with early support from Steve Lawler, who’s been smashing it at his VIVa Warrios residency at Sankeys Ibiza, along with Hot Since 82, Deetron, Catz ‘N Dogs and highly rated rising stars Dale Howard, DeMarzo and Him_Self_Her. 

His versatility as a producer also bore a remix of hip hop outfit Big Beat Bronson’s ‘New Me’ which B-Traits picked up and played on her BBC Radio 1 show, proving Cristoph’s skills extend beyond club-moving beats. 

His piece-de-la-resistance however, is his latest EP ‘Shelter’ due for release on Underground Audio, the home label of the likes of the hugely touted Finnebassen and recent BBC Radio 1 ‘Future Star’ DeMarzo. 

The four-track collection oozes class rarely seen from an artist so fresh on the scene. The title track ‘Shelter’ hits hard with thudding kicks and bass that build towards a heavy drum workout interchanged with dynamic vocal and synth drops that keep the energy flowing throughout, before steamrolling towards a pumping finish. 

‘Purvy’ is driven by lashing of low-slung bass, yearning vocals and funky claps and takes the EP in an undeniable groove-smacked ‘90s house direction with delightful, grin-inducing results.

‘Tell Me’ is the most intricate of the quartet; deep with understated tribal undertones, it shines of Cristoph’s versatility as a producer, as rolling murky sonics percolate underneath layers of bass and whispered vox, which drop into a melody-laded tech house workout more intent on building atmosphere than busting any dancefloor bollocks. 

The EP is rounded out by ‘Move on’, a cut that will have you swaying uncontrollably from foot-to-foot with its funky-as-hell bassline, persistent drums and cleverly programmed creeping synth melody that builds to a club-smashing crescendo as the track does exactly what it promises on tin. Outstanding.

Off the back of Kry Wolf’s release, Food Music returns with another quality release, this time from UK duo ‘Danism’, and collaborator ‘Rae’.

Dan Smith (of Liquid People fame) and Drum n Bass tyrant Dan Nu:Tone, collectively known as ‘Danism’, are no strangers to the UK club scene. Sharing instrumental and production talent alongside an ability to move the dance floor makes Danism an unstoppable duo. With previous releases receiving widespread support and having featured on labels such as Noir Music, the Danism EP sees the pair deliver two huge tracks that promise to shake up clubs all over.

First up is ‘Work on this’, which builds on a repeated and hypnotizing vocal before diving into a punchy drop. As the track develops, the sub-bass and sweeping tones make ‘Work on this’ one to tremor dance floors with a killer sound system.  

On the flip is ‘Sirens’. The track begins with an atmospheric and dreamy intro before switching up into a roaring bass-led groover.  Combining the growling bass with a serious rolling beat makes ‘Sirens’ a guaranteed weapon for the club.

Dirty Doering - Katermukke Stage Sonne Mond & Sterne Festival SMSX8 2014

Chicago born and bred DJ/Producer Keith Perez, recording here as Kid Enigma, unleashes his first release for DJ Sneak’s I’m A House Gangster imprint ‘The Blessing of Ipseity’ on 20th October.

In just a couple of years, IAHG have elbowed their way into the packed house music marketplace, creating a unified sound, culture and image for their label, making them stand out from the many pretenders.  Continuing what has been a great year of releases, IAHG follow up the brilliant ‘Space Powder’ EP by BlakSpun (Blakkat & DJ Spun) with an EP of fresh rolling Chicago grooves from young-gun Kid Enigma.

‘The Blessing of Ipseity’ EP features five tracks all built around 808 and 909 beats with four of them featuring verses and hooks from Kid Enigma himself.  Ranging from moody 3am head-nodders to percussion-rich, relentless house grooves, all of them epitomizing aspects of the IAHG sound.

Put together with love and devotion, Kid Enigma’s only motivation is, as he says “...unifying people on the dance floor…”  To this end, he has served up an EP where the beats draw on a Chi-Town culture “…of friendly unspoken competition between Chicago DJs and their live sets” and the “percussion you may hear on the streets downtown”.   The result is a set of dance floor-friendly tracks, full of swing, boom bass and jacking beats.

Jamie Jones launches his new subsidiary label of Hot Creations, HOTTRAX with a three track EP of upfront dance floor business. The label will be dedicated to a more underground dance floor orientated aesthetic, only for the headstrong!

This three track features phenomenal 'Changes'. Jamie has championed it all summer and as soon as you hear it you'll realize why. It's a heady hypnotic brew of oscillator-funk and ghetto-groove, arpeggiating synths bubble hypnotically under the rising ebb and flow of the melody as infectious groove drives you on.. the truth is we are all going through changes!

On the flip and Jamie jacks the groove on the 'Road To The Studio'. Incessant chanting and looped vocals are cleverly layered upon each other creating a impending sense of explosive anticipation as the rhythm effortlessly builds to maximum effect. Finally, the irresistibly charming 'No Rush' plays upon retro garage feel while the minor keys serve to create a sense eeriness on the floor. A great closure to a superb three track EP, and what a way to kick off the new label in style. Watch out for HOTTRAX releases in 2013.

Next up on 1trax, the debut release from a promising young Bulgarian talent, JustMe. 

A producer with a penchant for sultry aesthetics, dark overtones and killer grooves, JustMe has already grabbed the attention of top discerning selectors and labels alike.
A trained sound engineer, JustMe’s emphasis of sonic quality is paramount in his production, with every sound carefully placed and tweaked into its own frequency range, all contributing to the greater cause, the sum of its parts, the groove. 

‘Zero Gravity’ rings true to its name, with a heavy-set bottom that draws the listener into heads down space – hypnotic and heady. Techy, yet organic, like a dark earthy hole with shards of daylight poking through its dark exterior.  On remix duties, Dean Barred gives ‘Zero Gravity’ a certain bounce whilst retaining its moody nature. 

Following suit, ‘The D.U.B.’ rolls along in a composed fashion with pin point precision on the processing. Rounding off the EP, ’303py’ broods with a gnarly edge.
JustMe is just getting started but already impressing.
