Bye Bye 2021 (V/A) [BNSD - DGT002]

Hackney native Eliza Rose has learned everything she knows from her local soundscape. Growing up on the 2-step and 4x4 rhythms of UK Garage (citing the sounds of Lovestation’s Teardrops and B-15’s Girls Like Us as her first true garage experience) and spending her spare time listening to artists such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and other jazz and soul associated artists has provided the platform for one of London’s leading lights to truly shine - whether it be through house, garage, mo-town, soul or funk - seamlessly blending eras and sounds together through retro-modern vocals and productions on her own Rosebud Recordings.

There couldn’t be a more fitting artist to celebrate Lobster Theremin’s milestone 100th release with, having been a part of the Lobster family for some time now through a long-standing friendship and record shop & label responsibilities, and alongside emerging label affiliate M4A4 the pair deliver 4 killer cuts of 2-step, house-garage and jungle fitting of the moment.

“With Shades of Red I wanted to combine my love of Jazz style vocals alongside my love for UK garage in a way that still felt authentic for both sounds”, she says. “I'm very interested in revamping and presenting the ‘old skool’ for a new audience while hoping that the people who do have respect for these more retro sounds will also appreciate the tracks. For example the lyrics ‘such an uneasy evil' ect in Nyt lyf is a nod to the track of the same name which is one of my favourite Jazz standards.”

‘Night Lyf’ is a bass-driven bouncer; romantic lyricism, skippy beats and punchy production makes for an easy-listening groove that could just as easily go off in the club, while ‘Delectable’ sees Eliza marry lounge-jazz vocalisation with M4A4’s joyous blend of UK and US garage - inspired, uplifting and joyous.

‘Temptation’ is a celebration of the Hackney melting pot; meandering through blues, soul, jazz, house and garage in a contemporary blend of old and new, before a late-night rush in the rave is inspired by the 160 breakbeats and lairy basslines of ‘Troublemaker’s jungle riddim.

Harrison BDP’s carefully curated and otherworldly approach to dance music is unmatched. Time spent in his countryside home in South Wales has given way to some of his most playful yet thought-provoking work to date. Now the Welsh DJ and producer debuts on MÖRK, combining elements of classic house styles and futuristic soundscapes - locking listeners in a voyage you’ll never want to end. 

Title track ‘Stand Your Ground’ is a seasoned helping of vintage BDP. Rolling snares lock eyes with sprawling acid leads and non-material aesthetics, while the track's foundation comes from the warm, skippy bassline from which every other element answers to. ‘All That’s On My Mind’ spans nine minutes of enhancement, as dense grooves cross paths with rays of sunshine that melt between the trees. Dreamy vocals ascent above the emerald forest acting as our guide. 

‘I Thought I Would Be Different But I Feel The Same’ the title of a track many of us can relate to, is a self reflective piece perfect for late-night strolls and early morning observation, before the record comes to a close with ‘I Made A New Friend Today’. Aquatic synths soar above a stripped back groove, oozing optimism and class, all the while still shrouded in the mystery and depth we’ve come to expect from one of electronic music's most consistent producers.

Meanjin (Brisbane) based artist Scalymoth comes steaming through for this week’s LT Podcast with a high energy mix that swiftly moves between bass rollers, percussive techno and playful vocal samples. Don’t sleep!

In Scalymoth's words:
One of my fears (thoughts?) is that I only have two ears and a finite amount of time to listen to all the good music in the world. With that in mind, this mix pays homage to as many of my current favourites as I possibly could fit in an hour, no specific genre (and one of my tracks because like, 'look at me go mum' etc). In these confusing times of pain, fear, sadness and anger, we at Guerrilla Bizarre want to do our part in alleviating the sorrow felt by the people in Ukraine.

We reached out to our favourite artists in the underground scene to ask for contribution and tried to put together a meaningful effort to help with the situation. “First Aid for Ukraine'' is the result of this massive teamwork. You can get these 60+ tracks at the accessible price of 8 euros, or donate more if you have the possibility. Of the money you pay, a small amount (around 15%) will be unavoidably withheld by Bandcamp; the rest will go entirely to the International Committee of the Red Cross, with weekly donations every Friday. Please check our social media pages to see how much we’ll be donating every week.

Heading up the release is Barcelona based beatmaker - Vince Void, a fitting return to the label. His “Explorer” EP is crammed with dynamite dance floor enthusiasm, moving elegantly between dusty breaks, slick house and space infused electro grooves. Taking care of the remix in a fine manner is Mario Liberti, the Deep In Dis founder bringing the high energy funk for the small hours of the night!  

First up is “Phase Finale”, setting things up in a playful mood, the elasticated groove drives the track as otherworldly pads and synths wander blissfully around the heart of the production. Classy club room action from Void ready for the summer floors. More of the same in title track “Explore” quirky samples flash in and out as the journey unfolds, another certainty for the record bag. Mario Liberti’s remix immediately gives you a nostalgic rave vibe, huge broken drums, rave stabs and sub heavy bass make this a modern day anthem. 

On the B side Void’s innovative collaboration with Alex Garcia takes the helm - “Access Denied”. Seductive spoken word draws you into the meticulously arranged trip, unexpected twists and turns continue to appear before you. Driven from the get go is the final track “The Vision”, tinges of acid conversing with the explosive and chunky drums patterns.
