"A sequence of places. Indefinite. A continuous flow of emotions that paints a landscape in the air. Here are new colors, new notes. And new atmospheres. It’s all about atmosphere. Intimate. And I cannot define boundaries, or limits. So wide, but so real. Like the fields that unfold while we’re moving, our travel. And they are reflected in our eyes like morning dew in a mirror".

ASIP029 Halo - The Inner Realm

"Departure is how the act of moving from one place to another begins. This is a station of passage, an abandoned station you see through the window while you’re travelling to another town. It’s an isolated place, vanishing in the mist, where few voices are heard and a train is passing by. All is immersed in the ambience of a particular Autumn day; a soft rain starts pouring down while all our feelings are flowing freely."

ASIP029 Halo - An Isolated Railway

Interstellar Ruins, Pt. 3

At just 22 years of age, Italian prodigy Pasquale Riviezzo is one of the most promising talents we’re yet to feature in The Places Series. Playing the piano for over eleven years and the guitar for over six, you may know Pasquale from his lush ambient productions on Dewtone from 2012. But it’s here, amongst detailed field recordings, emotional scores and vivid instrumental journeys that Halo really shines as a talented composer.

His Places Series EP, titled ‘Song Of The Highest Tower’ captures what he describes as, “something very intimate and close to the artist’s personality and subjectivity” – something “incidental to the artist’s mind” or what some of us may simply call, creative expression. And as most us know, there’s no better way to bring this to life than a combination of enigmatic strings, poignant melodies and a heart-felt back story.

We’ve all experienced those moments when we capture a perfect image in our minds eye; those indelible scenes we can recall with perfect clarity. These snapshots might last a lifetime or disappear as quickly as they were realized but in that split-second, for composer Pasquale Riviezzo, it’s a preservation of a very personal kind.

“I usually travel from Milan to Naples for my university studies. These are images of places that I saw in a misty morning while I was on the train, that were fixed in my heart for a moment, mixed with flowing feelings and thoughts. They maybe became different places after that, but this is a story I’d like to tell you, through notes. It’s how a common place becomes intimate, and then a strangely isolated place.”

Inspired by transit and transcendence, misty mornings and fleeting connection, Pasquale’s EP is a collection that’s characterized by weighty piano chords, ethereal atmospheres and measured use of string to give tracks a melancholic focus. It allows ‘An Isolated Railway’ to drift along measured string and gentle piano, ‘Cloud Gate’ to swell with the soft vision of rolling Cumulus and the heavens opening, and the maudlin melody of ‘The Inner Realm’ to breathe through the dead space and atmosphere.

‘An Isolated Railway is the abandoned station you see through the window while you’re travelling to another town,” Pasquale explains. “It’s an isolated place, vanishing in the mist, where few voices are heard and a train is passing by, and The Inner Realm is am indefinite sequence of places, a continuous flow of emotions that paints a landscape in the air.”

‘Cloud Gate’ is when the gate of clouds opens wide and the rain starts falling and I’ll listen to ‘The Wastelands’ with closed eyes and see sounds painting a landscape in the imaginary space. I called that place ‘The Wastelands’ because it feels like a distant landscape brought back for a just moment, then, just like a dream, at the end you open your eyes and there’s no trace left. Just a subtle sensation of having been there, somewhere, sometime.”

In celebration of their latest signing, Erased Tapes are set to re-issue Ben Lukas Boysen’s compelling debut album ‘Gravity’, alongside new album ‘Spells’ on 10th June 2016.

‘Gravity’ was the first album Ben recorded under his own name, merging programmed piano pieces with live instruments, combining the controllable technical world and the often unpredictable aspects of live improvisation.

From ‘Only In The Dark’ to the two movements of ‘Nocturne’, it’s a serious, solemn listen. And yet, with pieces like ‘To The Hills’ and ‘Eos’, ‘Gravity’ is an exploration of heights, cliffs and vertigoes. With piano lines and choir-like drones, this record suits its title in all its meanings, as the magnetic force takes us deeper towards the core. Marking a new beginning, this debut reveals a touching, and more melodic side to Ben’s body of work, which he previously only hinted at as HECQ.

Friend and fellow Erased Tapes artist Nils Frahm mixed and mastered the album. Ben is not a master pianist like his dear friend, but his sound collages are so meticulously designed that after hearing the result an impressed Nils declared: “from now on, if anyone asks – this is a real piano”.

His intricate, humanised programming – enhanced by drummer Achim
Färber, additional synthesisers played by Nils, and a considerate selection of echoes, delays and compressors – has been used to create a hybrid sound that intends to deceive, question and challenge existing listening habits. Utilising the contrast between reduction and decoration, ‘Gravity’ as well as its successor ‘Spells’ can be seen as a quest to find out how much or how little composition is required to constitute a song. Why the ear can and should be deceived about the authenticity of instruments. What significance these instruments have within this process, and why the personal perception of balance and sound exclude ultimate truths. Linking the two albums are the four movements of ‘Nocturne’, an ever-developing conversation that on occasion flirts with the grandeur of compressed rock drums.

As HECQ Ben has released nine albums since 2003, exploring everything from ambient to breakcore. He has simultaneously established himself as a trusted composer and sound designer, working for a wide array of clients including Amnesty International and Marvel Comics; composing for feature films, games, art installations and convention opening titles.

After embracing this demanding line of work, in 2010 Ben felt the need to explore his roots and early education, which inspired these albums under his own name. Born in 1981 as the third child of opera singer Deirdre Boysen and actor Claus Boysen, his classical music training on piano and guitar began when he was seven years old; the works of Bruckner, Wagner and Bach laid an important foundation. Rediscovering this music shared with his parents – united with the sounds of Autechre, Cristian Vogel and
Jiri.Ceiver to Pink Floyd and Godspeed You! Black Emperor – brought back an understanding of why he wanted to write music in the first place.

Argentinian musician Federico Durand returns with his 2nd full length album on 12k following 2016’s A Través Del Espejo (12k1085). Taking his already minimalist composition style Federico challenged himself by using only one synthesizer for this beautiful album of sparse, hypnotic dustiness. His talent for creating works of so much emotion out of so little attest to his concentration when working and his passion for the craft. La Niña Junco is a handwoven gem. Music with a humble origin and a deep resonating soul.  Famed Argentinian artist Lola Goldstein graciously illustrated the album cover, caputuring the idea of memory and object that is so infused with Federico’s work.

“Immersed in the beauty of the very moment, the songs for La Niña Junco were recorded in one take during two days, in a rush of inspiration. I used a small sound palette: one instrument, a Crumar Performer synthesizer along with two looping pedals and Roland Space Echo RE-201. The Crumar was my first synthesizer. I bought it many years ago and then gave it to a friend, who later lent it to my brother. After a very long time, I got it back when we moved to La Cumbre, a small town in the central mountain area of Argentina. As this instrument has a very limited but beautiful oscilator, it was rewarding to make small melodies using only its almost magical sound. I was enchanted to have the chance to play with my Crumar again: in many ways this album feels like returning to an early home. The electric noises of my old, broken keyboard, were an unexpected and musical gift and a humble proof of the passing of time.”

A little ambient piece I wrote yesterday afternoon.. Sorry not to have so much time for composing music until July, but I really wanted to share something with you in a little free time from my studying.

I always thought of ambient music as a way to effectively depict soundscapes with notes and musical colors (frequencies, tones, silences).

I’ll listen to this with closed eyes and I’ll see sounds painting a landscape in the imaginary space. Like emerging from the deepness of your thoughts, and sorrounding you with its presence, because it's you who has been creating it. Music conceals places in its notes.

I called that place "The wastelands", a distant landscape brought back to our time for a little moment, as it were while the wind blew in the cloudy sky and the sun set over the horizon of the open fields.

Just like a dream, at the end you open your eyes and there's no trace left, if not a subtle sensation of having been there, somewhere, sometime...
