Today with the beginning of new month of 'Magh', it also marks the start of singing of Raag Basant. As per tradition, on the last night of the month of 'Poh', an ardass happens at Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar, for commecing of Raag Basant Gayan (Singing).

According to the maryada of Sri Harmandir Sahib, the Hazoori Raagis sings the shabad ਮਾਹਾ ਮਾਹ ਮੁਮਾਰਖੀ ਚੜਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਬਸੰਤੁ ॥ (first shabad of Raag Basant in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, at Ang 1168) to mark the start of Raag Basant Gayan. And till the occasion of Holla Mahalla, Raag Basant is being sung, ending with shabad, ਸੁਰਹ ਕੀ ਜੈਸੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਚਾਲ ॥ (Dhan Bhagat Kabir Ji's shabad on Ang 1196, i.e. last shabad of Raag Basant in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji). This also indicates that Raagis should sing all rest of Raag Basant shabads in those 2 months but ਹੈਨਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਘਣੇ,

Once the Head Granthi of Sri Darbar Sahib said at a event that Bhai Randhir Singh Ji used to sing all the shabads of Raag Basant during his service at Sri Darbar Sahib, Sri Amritsar Sahib.
