Wow... what an absolutely incredible experience... first absolutely gorgeous sunset of the year, I started in a t-shirt!!! The 1st Anniversary of Music.je (thanks for the support MM!) was not without its trials and tribulations. Some way off the beaten track; a WWII gunsite on the South West corner of Portelet Common in beautiful Jersey, where the internet was poor but with some creative cabling and power solutions managed to get just enough to broadcast an epic sunset!!! An absolutely incredible evening at the foot of Mont Orgueil aka Gorey Castle in Gorey, Jersey. One of my favourite ever sets, the energy in the air was just magical, everybody was having such a great time; a really mixed crowd reflected in the range of music I ended up playing! I love the challenge of trying to engage everybody at an event like that, aged 16 to 60+... the first time I'd played after dark for a long time! When the fog rolled in it was still really warm, epic scenes as the floodlight from the pier reflected on Mother Nature's amazing smoke machine as seen in the cover pic (thank you Lorraine for the amazing photos!!). Just couldn't stop grinning from ear to ear! Big thanks to Jason & Nick for organising 🙏🙌. 

For the lucky ones who were there in person, thank you for coming and for all the great energy you brought; ended up playing a lot longer than planned because of you, hope you enjoy listening back! 

For everybody else, you really had to be there but you can listen back too - hope you enjoy it! 😊 x

A return to the foot of 13th century castle Mont Orgueil in beautiful Jersey on a balmy August Thursday evening, this time for a Secret Sunset, with about 50 people turning up to enjoy a dance... recorded live from a minimal setup with interesting echoes & acoustics; far from ideal for mixing seamlessly -  I'll just leave it at that! An unprecedented 11 white label edits & remixes in this set to try & counter the FB algorithm police, but also to keep the mixed audience engaged & moving! Starting off nice & gentle in the daylight it was fun to get into some after dark music too... I was delighted with the feedback from my very own first release coming out on @strippedmusicmgmt on 9th September; a remix of @darkersound1's Through The Night 🥰 Thanks to all who watched the stream or came down!

Hello Everyone, it is time for another exclusive PFG Progcast, hold on tight and prepare one's senses as we take you around the globe in search of perfect dance floor beats!

Today we finish our month long hook up with Tribu Sessions, by choosing a special guest from them and us, just for you... We think we've chosen wisely! A UK Based DJ and Producer who refuses to be pigeonholed by one genre, his amazing set's based at spectacular locations always encompass a broad spectrum of styles, a style that always captivates the crowd. Ladies and Gents, it is with great pleasure we bring you .... Gus F!

Gus F is a musician, DJ and producer with a broad range of musical tastes reflected in the wide variety of events he plays at. Wether it be his residency at club night Dig Deep on the beautiful island of Jersey, to extended sets at Nude Beach, outdoor parties and even underground lock-ins.

Gus is a regular contributor to The Beat Laundry and Music.je live streams with numerous sets during both lockdowns, helping to keep our scene's crews all connected. As well as that Gus curates and produces music for his own Secret Sunset events; live streaming from different beautiful locations that showcase the island of Jersey.  These deep melodic sunset sessions have helped to share positive all vibes around the world.

Gus also won the soundcloud.com/sashaofficial /soundcloud.com/last-night-on-earth x TRAKTOR mix competition in November 2019 and having dipped his toe into production just last year has a forthcoming release on soundcloud.com/strippedmusicmgmt, EXCLUSIVELY aired in todays mix. There are a number of other remix commissions in the pipeline with well-known artists and labels, all after having made an impact with popular bootlegs from London Grammar, Billie Eilish & Kate Bush over the past 18 months.

PFG The Progcast - Episode 78 - Gus F

A half hour mini mix recorded for Tim Hunter's show on BBC Radio in the Channel Islands broadcast on 17th September; slightly self-indulgent including three of my productions but I was delighted to have the opportunity to showcase new music and premiere a couple of tracks on the BBC - thanks again for the support Tim! I included my unreleased track Oh My Love that has had great support from Nick Warren, Luke Brancaccio and Gustin, as well as my first two officially commissioned remixes; my remix of Darkersound's Through The Night that came out on Stripped Recordings in September... the remix EP hit the #1 spot in the Electronica genre on Beatport. I ended this set with my brand new remix of VegaZ from Sri Lanka's "Dreaming You" coming out on Emotional Content records on 25th October. Enjoy! x

Wow... what an eventful Secret Sunset that was... lots of challenges...

Firstly the internet kept dropping from the first location... from my scouting mission the night before I knew that just up the road 50m was a bit better... luckily a quick test and it seemd to still be ok. Moved all the kit and started a bit late but better late than never!!!

Then the rain started, needed to borrow an umbrella (thank you 🙏🙏🙏) - which meant working one-handed... I thought if Black Coffee can do it, I'll give it a good go... decided to drop a BC remix in his honor (did anybody catch that? ) - pic in the comments of that period (thanks Lee - needed the support today!!! 👊)

Then the high tide nearly came and ended it early... meters away from us... we could feel the spray!!! Definitely needed the new SOUNDBOKS to drown out the wind & waves!!!

Finally... it was our old foe the Facebook algorithm police who shut us down just a minute before we were scheduled to end... can't be too upset with that!

Orbital's original Belfast is in my top 3 tunes of all time; absolutely love it, as do so many. A beautiful timeless gem. So why remix it at all, when it's so good already? I knew I risked upsetting a lot of fans of the original (including some of my mates who to summarise mostly said "you'd better not have butchered my favourite tune") - it's a big risk taking on an iconic tune; I'd have been happy to simply play the original, if it wasn't for two issues; 

1. It's SO recognisable that in a world where I was broadcasting Secret Sunset around the world on Facebook anything like Belfast is an almost instant takedown

2. The original tempo slows down at the end - so makes it harder to have a deep melodic house flow to a set. I can work around this, but as I was already thinking if I want to play it at all, I'll have to rework it a bit in order for it to not be a instant FB takedown - a ~120bpm track will be easier for me to mix in an unconventional environment (on a little Bose speaker with unfortunate sync/delay in it - mixing on headphones in the wind with no monitor, so less challenging transitions are preferable!) 😄

The first challenge when remixing is typically either needing stems or being able to accurately sample an original. 

As it happens, I didn't use any of the original for this, I recreated any bits that sound like the original. 

I couldn't get a clean sample of the original vocal either (the acapella is apparently available somewhere but all versions of the Emily Van Evera version of O Euchari In Leta Via I found all have an annoying new age backing track after the initial intro = unusable). 

I figured that there would likely be a singer locally in Jersey, perhaps out of work given the pandemic and up for a collaboration. As luck would have it, I found Georgi Mottram who is an amazing soprano, a Classical Brit Award nominee, and persuaded her initially to just lay down the vocal. 

However, I thought it would be a fun surprise for Georgi to turn up almost unannounced during a Secret Sunset & start singing 😄 I'd never done anything like this before; we had a basic sound check before; no additional sound engineer or pro setup, just me checking reverb levels & volume. It was a high risk & high reward situation streaming over 4G with a camper van battery & inverter keeping the lights on 😄Lots of fun for me at least... :-)

This mix uses more of a studio recording from Georgi; I've painstakingly normalised the typically high dynamic range in Georgi's recording (basically the variance in volume). Opera singing is typically overly dramatic vs the more subdued & relatively low dynamic range plainchaint that Hildegard von Bingen would have sung, and I'm finally happy with the result. 

So there you go - a long story about "my" version of Belfast.
